Dunfermline Athletic

Matty promises more

Friday, 12th Apr 2019

“There is still more to come, especially after what the fans saw in the first half on Tuesday night. I thought I played well, made an impact and I should have scored as well.

Teenager Matty Todd joined Dunfermline Athletic in May last year and made his league starting debut last Saturday against Partick Thistle closely followed by another start against Ross County on Tuesday night. The former Dunfermline High School pupil is delighted to be getting this kind of first team experience so soon after joining from Fife Elite. He commented:-

“It has been good, a lot different to what I expected it to be. With a couple of injuries at the start of the season I never really thought that I could be where I am right now. I am really enjoying it.

“I am only seventeen so it is good for my confidence, good that the manager is believing in me that I can go out and help the team win games and make an impact.

“There is still more to come, especially after what the fans saw in the first half on Tuesday night. I thought I played well, made an impact and I should have scored as well. There will be more as I get more confident throughout each match.”

All the players support Matty during the game no matter what was happening. He had two good efforts that skimmed the crossbar and he hit the right post at Dingwall in midweek where many would have considered him the Fifers best player, he agreed that he was unlucky not to score:-

“It is a disappointment for myself but chances will come score and make assists. I enjoyed playing in front of James Craigen, during both games his non stop talking helped me through every minute of the game that I played. It is good to have that kind of person behind me always trying to improve me.”

At Fife Elite John Potter was his coach but now he has also had the benefit of the different styles of Stevie Crawford and Greg Shields. Matty added:-

“Potts was great with us all but now it is different, Greg is trying to implement how he wants us to play. All he asks is for us to work hard, believe in your ability and believe to be the best. You hope to be that.

Matty appreciates the chance given to him by the manager:-

“Stevie was with me for the first six months in the reserves so he has obviously seen what I can add to his team. He told me to just keep the head, keep working hard and don’t let anything get to you - just work hard and keep doing what you are doing.

Being a Dunfermline boy, Matty knows the significance of a derby match against Falkirk so he is optimistic that he will be included in the squad for the match.

“I am hoping to be in the squad again. If I’m in the team on Saturday I would hope to take my chance. It will be a tough game for us but we have the belief in the camp that you can always go and win a game. If that happens on Saturday we definitely can climb closer to fourth place.

“There is a belief in the camp that we can still get there. You know until it is mathematically impossible we are still going to believe we can get into that fourth place.”
