Dunfermline 0 Queen of the South 1
Saturday, 27th Aug 2016Ladbrokes Championship: Paton and Talbot in for Cardle and Martin. Derek Lyle (45) 0-1: Jason Talbot red card (62)
For the visit of Queen of the South Allan Johnston made two changes from the side defeated 2-0 at Starks Park the previous Saturday. Michael Paton and Jason Talbot in for Joe Cardle and Lewis Martin. David Hopkirk was out with a hamstring injury so only six players were on the bench .
Queen of the South who have made a very good start to the season through to the last eight of the Betfred Cup and unbeaten in the league after the first three fixtures, made no changes to their starting eleven that defeated Falkirk last time out. The only alteration to the visitors` squad was former Par Chris Higgins back on the substitutes list.
After a minute`s applause in respect for former Pars player Rab Stewart who died earlier this week it was Stephen Dobbie who got the match underway with the visitors attacking the goal at the McCathie Stand end. Kallum Higginbotham sustained a knock after just one minute when he failed to avoid Jamie Hamill`s sliding tackle. He recover to play on and then when Dobbie threatened to get close to shoot, Ben Richards-Everton made a good and crucial tackle.
Queens, all in red, took the game to the Pars and much of the opening ten minutes were played at the home end. Paton tried a through ball for Michael Moffat to run on to but Lee Robinson beat the striker to it.
In 11 minutes Mark Millar`s pass sent Grant Anderson through the Pars defence and Talbot was penalised as the Queens player went down in style. The free kick 19 yards out was taken by Derek Lyle and he bent the ball around the right side of the five man Pars wall to hit first the right post, then the left post and tapped back for David Hutton to clear. Quite a let off.
Hutton`s next save on 16 minutes was to keep the ball going out for a corner on the left after Aussie Lyndon Dykes had his shot blocked by Lee Ashcroft. In an effort to change the flow Ryan Williamson tried to get round the defence but was pushed into the advertising boards by Marshall. Paton lofted a 20th minute free kick into the Queens penalty box but without Ashcroft and Richards-Everton up the opposition defence soaked up the danger.
Williamson then got in the Pars first shot on target after McCabe, Higginbotham and Moffat had combined to create the opportunity. The red shirts kept Ryan out while back at the other end Anderson`s delivery in from the right was headed wide of the far post by Lyle.
Dunfermline were awarded a 28th minute free kick 25 yards out when Darren Brownlie`s hand stopped Higginbotham`s chip. The Pars number 20 took the setpiece but sent his effort over both the wall and the crossbar.
Dowie headed a Hamill corner over the Pars bar before Andy Geggan produced a really good chance. His 34th minute through ball from the edge of the centre circle was chested down on the edge of the Queens box but with the keeper advancing Marshall managed to usher the ball out.
At the other end it was the Fifers turn to have the fortune. A rogue pass from McCabe sent Dobbie away on goal but he sent his great chance wide of the right post. Dunfermline then had another good opportunity, Reilly`s cross from the left side of the box passing Higginbotham to allow Moffat a shot from 15 yards but he did not connect well and sent the ball wide right.
With the interval beckoning Dobbie was taken down by McCabe and the Dumfries side were awarded a free kick 35 yards out. Hamill sent the ball outside the far post where Dowie headed the ball back across the face of goal for LYLE to head home the 45th minute opener. Simple but effective 0-1
There was little time to do other than restart.
Half time: Dunfermline 0 Queen of the South 1
In a tactical substitution Paul McMullan came on for Kallum Higginbotham at the restart but Queens made the brighter start. Hamill`s cross to Dykes at the far side of the box was despatched off target. Then in 50 minutes Queen of the South`s third corner of the game created uncertainty. Put off by his own defender Hutton did not take the cross, Talbot made an overhead clearance and Dobbie sent the ball wide left.
A good move in 54 minutes almost got the equaliser. Paton swung the ball left for Moffat who headed down first time to the advancing McCabe but his 20 yard screamer travelled just wide of the right upright.
In 62 minutes the Pars were reduced to ten men after Jason Talbot went in with both feet on his old team mate Kyle Jacobs. Referee Craig Charleston had little option but to brandish his red card. Andy Geggan dropped back into the left back role before two minutes later Lewis Martin replaced Michael Moffat to restore the captain back into his intended role.
From 30 yards Jacobs powered a 70th minute shot into the stand before the home side showed a bit of composure to maintain a degree of possession. Lee Ashcroft collected a yellow card as did Queens Marshall in a separate incident. Ashcroft made a telling tackle on Dykes to deny the 20 year old but the visitors did get get a good chance in 78 minutes but sub Dale Hilson`s final pass to Dobbie was too strong for him to control.
Time was running out for the Pars but McMullan continued to be direct and was unlucky with his final passes. Lewis Spence replaced McCabe for the final ten minutes. Dykes went down with an ankle injury and the stretcher party was called on. Steven Rigg replaced the injured Dykes and Queens then forced two more corners.
Geggan headed the second away and then a long ball out of his own half from McMullan sent Reilly chasing the ball down the right. Miraculously he kept the ball in beat Dowie but was then taken down earning the QOS captain a yellow card. Richards-Everton headed over from Paton`s setpiece.
In 89 minutes Geggan crashed a wicked shot on target from 35 yards out. Robinson couldn`t hold and Spence following up appeared to be taken from behind causing him to miss the chance right in front of goal. The ball was cleared off the line by Hamill but clearly something caused Lewis to fall down. Play continued and Williamson headed the ball into the keeper`s arms.
Williamson`s cross late into added time was headed behind for the Pars only corner of the game but Paton`s cross was fisted away by Robinson with the McCathie Stand making loud appeals for a corner. No penalty and no equaliser.
