Wighton is right on

Sunday, 14th Mar 2021

“It is another good three points, we keep moving in the right direction ....

The victory over Morton on Saturday came courtesy of the only goal of the match scored by Craig Wighton just a minute before half time. The 23 year old Dundonian had missed a 21st minute penalty so the winner came as a bit of a relief. He was not surprised by the fight put up by Gus Macpherson’s new charges:-

“It was a tough game, it is always a battle when you play against Morton. We knew that it was going to be like that before the game and we ground it out pretty comfortably in the end.”

Craig’s penalty miss came after team mate Declan McManus saw his penalty in the Pars last match saved by Queen of the South keeper Rohan Ferguson. Craig continued:-

“The Queens one, we had other chances in the game it wasn’t just the penalty. Obviously these things happen, we just need to keep getting in the right areas and hopefully get goals.“

Morton’s 21 year old keeper Aidan McAdams reacted quickly to keep Craig’s spot kick out:-

“It was a great save, he had a good game their goalie. He had a few very good saves. It is disappointing (to miss the penalty) but I am delighted then to get a goal after that. It settled us down at half time knowing that we had something to defend.

“It is another good three points, we keep moving in the right direction and we have another tough game next week.”

The two week break due to Covid-19 meant that some players had missed out on training and were all at different stages. Craig, who is signed for Dunfermline for next season but currently on loan from Hearts, explained the challenges that brought:-

“There were a lot of us isolating or whatever, some boys worse than others but it was good to have a couple of days training. There were a few boys who only trained one day, if that.

“It was meant to be complete rest. It was a long, however many days it was. Every day felt the same, it was just good to be back training and back playing games. I thought they were brilliant, we defended really well.

“The results, when we didn’t play, went with us and it was important that we capitalised on that on Saturday.”

Craig is willing to concede that his parent club have probably won the Championship title race but knows what is expected at Dunfermline:-

“We want to secure the play offs and we want to finish as high up as we possibly can. Hearts are a good bit ahead and they have a great squad, we just need to keep fighting. If we can win as many games as we can up until the end of the season we will hopefully finish in the play offs. Then anything can happen in those games.”

The Pars have nine matches remaining, including two against fellow play off contenders Dundee both home and away. Raith Rovers, Dundee and Dunfermline have all played 18 matches and there is only three points between them. Queen of the South are on 27 points, the same number as Dundee but having played two matches more, Craig acknowledged this would be a good time to hit form:-

“Yes it is, when you look at how Queens went on a wee run and they are right in the mix. It is important that we keep trying to get on a good run. We have some big games coming up so it is important to get back in training and work hard ahead of the Inverness game next weekend.”
