Rhys celebration is for real

Thursday, 9th Mar 2023

“I am 100 per cent taking that!

It’s been a difficult season so far for Rhys Breen when it comes to goal celebrations. Against Airdrieonians in August he started celebrating an added time goal that would have won the match only for it to be ruled out by the referee. Last week he led the celebration of the second goal against Alloa Athletic only for Chris Hamilton and Craig Wighton to make stronger claims on it. On Tuesday night Rhys was sure that he was going to be on to the scoresheet. Asked directly whether he was the scorer of the opening goal he was quick to reply:-

“Absolutely aye! Obviously there was a bit of confusion. I think it was over originally and then it came back out, and that`s why the referee had a decision to make. When I saw the ball over the line, and saw everybody react, I just ran. I was just looking about and I was thinking `where am I supposed to run to`! I was right over to the fans, I had a belter!

“I am 100 per cent taking that! There was a thing last weekend where I didn`t get the goal, and I was raging, but I`m definitely taking this one!”

Rhys’ goal was his fifth of the season but this was the biggest of his season as Falkirk’s return visit to The KDM Group East End Park lived up to all its expectations and the big 23 year old central defender brimmed with delight as he said:-

“I enjoyed that one, it was brilliant! Every single second of it, since I woke up, the nerves and everything. I absolutely loved it! I think your big games speak for themselves. You`ve got the excitement before the games. Obviously, when we heard that the crowd was going to be as big as it was, it gives you that extra edge but once you`re on the pitch, five minutes into the game, you settle in and you just have to go and do your job.

“A big crowd is what you`re wanting every single week. I`m glad they came out in force and I`m just glad we could get the result for them.

“The way that we want to play is high-paced, and we want to press. That was the message at half-time, that we had to go out and make sure that we`re putting that work in.

“The two goals came from hard work. Obviously with Toddy`s goal, the people running about the pitch made that happen. So I think the biggest thing we have to take from this game is the hard work that we put into it.”

Most would concede that Falkirk had the better of the first half but Dunfermline restricted them to one Gary Oliver header which Deniz Mehmet held and Rhys felt that again demonstrated an example of the team’s hard work:-

“It`s been like this the whole season. I think that`s our 16th clean sheet. It`s unbelievable and it`s brilliant to be partnered up with the guys in the team.

“It was a big game and it was a big occasion. We did our job and we saw the game out. We`ve won 2-0, picked up another clean sheet, and, yeah, we`ll enjoy the night. We`ll have a recovery day and, again, be right back into work on Thursday.”

The win over Falkirk, the team closest to the Pars in League One, opened up an eight points advantage over them but with nine games left, Dunfermline have everyone in the league to play once again. Rhys warned:-

“It`s far from over and we know that. We can`t get too carried away. That was just another game ticked off and we`ll be back in this week for the game against Peterhead this Saturday, which will be a tough, tough game, so we have to make sure we`re prepared for that.”
