Tuesday, 30th Jan 2024cinch Reserve League: two trialists start in otherwise unchanged Reserve XI. Kane Thomson (38) 1-0:
Dunfermline Reserve team showed two changes from the one that played Dundee with two trialists starting. It was the first Queen’s Park B match at the city Stadium and it kicked off in bright sunlight on a still cold January afternoon.
The home side did most of the early pressing forcing two corners in the opening eight minutes before both Dunfermline trialists had shots from 25 yards out that were blocked. Taylor Sutherland won a tenth minute corner on the left but that was defended all too easily.
There was an absence of goalmouth action and Taylor was caught offside when Jake Rennie pushed forward in 25 minutes. A slack pass then allowed Scott Williamson a crack at goal but Max Little reacted well to save the effort from the number nine who returned last week from his loan to Cove Rangers. On the half hour Little had an easy hold when Kane Thomson shot from the left side of the box.
A Tod foul on Williamson gave McKinstry the opportunity to fire a dangerous ball in from the free kick 28 yards out on the left side but Little held Williamson’s headed effort. Queen’s possession eventually paid dividends yet in the end it was a simple goal. Kane THOMSON cut in from the left and took the 38th minute chance to fire low into the far side of the Dunfermline goal. 1-0
Little made another good save to deny Lucas McCormick a minute before the interval and an added time Dunfermline corner was ably defended.
Half time: Queen’s Park 1 Dunfermline 0
The home side made two substitutions before the match recommenced - Ben Ferguson and Rocco Hickey-Fugaccia replaced Scott Williamson and Stuart McKinstry. The second half like the first was played into the sun with the Fifers making a better impression for most of it.
A foul on Taylor Sutherland on the edge of the Queens box afforded Trialist 9 the chance from the free kick but although his 56th minute effort was on target it went straight to keeper Sam Kane. At the other end McCormick dispatched a good chance over the bar from in front of goal. Trialist 7 drilled a shot narrowly wide of the Spiders left post before Jake Sutherland’s 61st minute effort travelled across the face of goal untouched.
Midway through the half a Dunfermline corner from the left was defended but John Tod followed up but thumped the 25 yard shot narrowly wide left. Jake Sutherland tested Kane with a stinging shot in 78 minutes after he fed Ewan McLeod and his attempt returned to him. The corner on the right that resulted led to Taylor Sutherland being shut out at the far post.
The home side rallied towards the end with sub Max Fiddes having several chances, the best in 85 minutes when fed by Joe Smith, his on-target shot was kept out by Little’s outstretched right foot. Two minutes later the same foot kept out another Fiddes shot.
