Paul focused on Pars experience

Thursday, 19th Jan 2017

"It was purely about January and we will take each step as it comes and see how it goes after that."

Paul McMullan confessed that he did not want to leave Dunfermline and when the opportunity came around to stay until the end of the season, there was absolutely no doubt in the 20 year old`s mind that was what he wanted.

"There was a clause that would have allowed me to go back (to Celtic) but with the recent run in the team and how I was feeling about things it was not really in doubt to be honest that I was going to stay. It was just about getting the appropriate people making the appropriate phone calls."

Capped for Scotland at U16, U17 and U19 levels, Paul was not thinking any further ahead than this season, he added:-

"It was purely about January and we will take each step as it comes and see how it goes after that."

Paul, who hails from Stirling, acknowledged that being on his longest run in the team since coming on loan from Celtic, was another important factor in his desire to remain a Par:-

"I am really enjoying it and the results make it better when your team is winning and doing well. The boys are looking up the table instead of down the way which is really nice. It was always our aim to get closer to the teams above us, now we have got in contact hopefully we can keep the results going and push on.

"The whole team has been brilliant and you can see everybody gelling. It is mainly the same group of players who have been playing for the last seven or eight weeks. We are all getting to know each other and everybody knows their roles in the team, that has been really good."

On loan players always come in the hope of gaining valuable experience of first team football and Paul is no different:-

"The last year has been quite frustrating for me so to get a regular run in the team is really pleasing and something that I want to keep up."

As the manager keeps reminding everyone who will listen, the Pars squad is bursting with talent and the subs bench is constantly warmed by quality players just waiting to take their chance. Paul explained what that meant for him:-

"If you have a half where you are not playing well, there are two guys warming up who can take your place. You just cannot afford to have any slack performances. I think that is what is driving people on and why we are doing so well."

Very conscious of competition for wide positions from the likes of Joe Cardle and Michael Paton, Paul McMullan continued:-

"The two of them have shown this season what qualities they have got and what they can bring to the team. I just try my best to try and show the qualities that I can bring to the team."

Paul has had loan periods at Stenhousemuir, St Mirren and Morton and with the need to secure a contract for next season, regular Championship games are certainly placing Paul in the shop window.

"Every team you play against is there to be impressed, you never know what could happen. My contract is up at the end of the season and you want as many options as possible when that time comes. Anytime you play you want to put in a really good performance so that you can plant in the back of their mind that you are a good player."
