Matty Strikes Again
Sunday, 15th Jan 2023“If you get a chance have a shot, either foot because you are a good shooter”
Having started every one of Dunfermline’s 27 games this season and played the full 90 in an overwhelming majority of them, Matty Todd has had a crucial role in the Pars success this season. In his now expected modest style, the 21 year old home grown product deferred any mention of his seventh goal of the season to point out:-
“The main thing is that it is a great result, it is what we came for. It was a good performance all round I think. First half we started well, we got on the front foot and couldn’t say they really had a chance after that. I thought we dominated all over the pitch. We got four goals but we could have scored plenty more as well. I am just delighted with the three points.”
With Dunfermline winning every match in which Matty has scored this season, his 36th minute goal from 25 yards out extended the lead to 2-0 and would continue the record:-
“The coaching staff are always on at me to hit shots from range and it was actually the last thing Dave (Mackay) said to me before I walked out on to the pitch, ‘if you get a chance have a shot either foot because you are a good shooter’. I didn’t actually think it was going in, it took a dip just at the last minute and flew in so I’m happy with it.”
Matty rued not taking an easier 58th minute opportunity but was pleased that the one that did count was yet another goal with less favoured left foot. He revealed he had been ribbed about that:-
“I don’t know how many that is now but the boys are saying that I’m a left footer. I am getting slaughtered for the easy one with my right foot. I just rolled it past the post, it is one that I should have scored. I can’t even lie, I should have scored it. It is something I need to learn and keep doing what I’m doing and my goals and my assists will come. I’m just happy with the three points.”
Now with his goal tally on seven he is delighted to be doing what the coaching staff thought he was capable of:-
“It is something that the coaching staff said when they first came in, that they wanted me to add goals to my game. I feel like I have done that at the moment but there are still more chances that I have to take. Especially that one in the second half there, I should have scored from that, it should have been another one. It is something that I want to keep on adding - goals and assists.”
With Josh Edwards playing further up the park and Chris Mochrie alongside Matty, they made it a very unpleasant afternoon for Peterhead to defend.
“It was good. We have combinations that we work on throughout the week in training and we just hope that we can carry that on into the game on the Saturday. I’m sure that we did that against Peterhead.
“We thought they could come and sit in and they did that. We had worked on patterns of play that could hurt them. Some of the play was exceptional, we started well and carried that on for the whole ninety minutes.
“Now our full focus turns on Dundee on Tuesday. We go up there hoping to get through into the semi final of the cup.” As for the potential of a Fife derby in the semi final, Matty warned:-
“We can’t look that far ahead yet, we just have to be fully focused on Tuesday night.”
