Happy return for Cammy

Pars skipper calms the waves of attack from his former team mates

Cammy Gill captained the young Dunfermline side at Arbroath on Monday night and the 20 year old keeper played a major role in making sure the journey back from the Angus coast was a happy one.

Despite putting in a great personal performance Cammy was not willing to take all the praise. Speaking after the match he told the website:-

“I thought the defence was brilliant especially in that second half. I was kept busy but the boys in front of me were busier and working their socks off to be fair. The back four worked especially hard for the full 90 minutes. The team defended well and deserved the clean sheet.”

A loan spell at Arbroath a couple of seasons back meant that Cammy had a fair bit of knowledge of his opponents.

“I love this place, I was only here for a couple of months but there is a nice spirit about the place. I was disappointed not to play for them but the loan got cut short.”

Yes the Lichties were without first team regulars Ryan McCord, Danny Denholm and Mark Whatley but it was still a side that they would have fielded in League One. Cammy continued:-

“There are a lot of the players still here, the same management and they have a really good side. To come away with a 1-0 win is tremendous for the boys. We were quite a young team, only a couple older first team players so it was good. A good run out for the boys and a test of character.”

Arbroath were strong, physical and vastly more experienced that the Dunfermline side which included several who had just stepped up from Fife Elite – Gregor Jordan, Josh Robertson and Kieran Swanson in the back four, Matty Todd in midfield, used subs Paul Brown and Lewis Sawers and then there were two other trialists who were still with Fife Elite. Confidence was not inhibited by the youthfulness of the squad and Cammy said:-

“I had seen the young boys, they were in a lot last season and in pre season they have done very very well. I think everyone can see that from the games that we have played that they are not out of their depth at all. Arbroath were a lot bigger than us but the boys have the ability to go and put in a performance like that was excellent.”

The Pars keeper certainly got plenty of match practice in this friendly. One exceptional first half save to keep Jason Thomson’s header out was ruled offside but Cammy felt that was just as important, “I was just happy that they didn’t get the corner from it. No balls in the net today at any moment so that was good.”

Arbroath made three substitutions at half time and turned the heat up on the Pars who led from a 39th minute goal from Matty Todd. There were a great many chances created by Arbroath and in particular Kane Hester must have been deeply disappointed not to be able to celebrate his 23rd birthday this week with at least one goal in this game.

Cammy laughed about the special effort that kept the Arbroath striker out:-

“I know Kane from being here a couple of seasons ago. It was more of a ‘camera save’, not intentional but it probably looked better than it was. It was a big long ball and I will look forward to looking at it again because I am not sure if it is one I should have come out for or if I did the right thing dropping off. It was a really good kick from the goalie, he kicked it the full length of the park and bounced maybe just outside the 18. I’d like to work on my positioning there.”
