Fisher pleased to find the net

Sunday, 16th Oct 2022

Sam Fisher:- “I am sure that it was going to nestle in that far corner so I’m taking it for myself even if you say I not getting it, I’m taking it.”

Having come on as a late sub against Falkirk last month Sam Fisher was delighted to make his first home start for Dunfermline in Saturday’s cinch League One win over FC Edinburgh.

In fact his two starts have also been in games when clean sheets have also been recorded. The 21 year old product of the Dundee youth system was pleased to reveal his thoughts post match:-

“I am happy that I’m in the team, I just need to keep my place now because there are a lot of boys pushing. Everyone is training well at the minute so as long as I keep training well and keep playing well, I can keep myself in the team and keep the games coming.”

Dunfermline leapfrogged the capital side to retake the top spot but it took until the 88th minute before the Edinburgh defence could be penetrated. Sam continued:-

“It was a very hard game, we knew that it was going to be difficult because they were on top of the league and been on a very good run. They deserved to be up there, they picked up good points against good teams so we are buzzing for taking the three points.”

The on loan Dundee player turned out to play a significant part with his shot deflecting off the opposition skipper, Liam Fontaine, to register the only goal of the game. Perhaps eager to take the pain off his former Dundee team mate, Sam was keen to claim the goal as his:-

“They were defending really deep and I just tried to put the ball into an area and luckily it has managed to go into the back corner. I will take them all day long if they come.

“I am absolutely taking that one hundred per cent! I am sure that it was going to nestle in that far corner so I’m taking it for myself even if you say I not getting it, I’m taking it.”

Sam felt that he could have scored a couple more but against a big team, scoring from setplays proved very difficult but regardless he said:-

“I am buzzing that the goal came about the way it did” and that just capped what has been a good eight weeks since arriving on loan from Dundee:-

“I’m absolutely loving it here, getting games as well helps a lot. Ever since I have come in all the boys, all the staff, the manager have been different class with me. I have fitted right in and I’m loving it so far.

“I could have stayed at Dundee and maybe had the odd appearance here and there. As soon as I knew Dunfermline wanted to take me there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to come here and play my football.”

Sam has been out on loan before at East Kilbride and twice at Forfar Athletic but by his own admission because of injuries, these have not gone as well as he would have wished. Re-united with James McPake, his former youth coach, Sam could not hide his pleasure:-

“This is my favourite loan so far and as long as that keeps going I will be a happy boy. It is a big advantage knowing James McPake, he was a big pull in me coming here. I know the way he works and he knows the way that I play so ever since I came in, he has been different class. I’m just happy if he is picking me week in week out. I need to repay that favour by putting in performances like that.”

In the last two Dunfermline games Sam has been played in a back three alongside Kyle Benedictus and Rhys Breen and he sees playing with such experienced players as good for his game:-

“Bene and Breeny have both played a lot of games. They have both been excellent with me, they have made me slot in at the back very easily and I’m loving playing alongside them. As well there is Aaron Comrie alongside me and he is experienced as well, he has been brilliant as well.”

Indeed Sam’s presence has opened up chances for Aaron with a goal last week and a close one on Saturday. He closed with praise for his right hand man:-

“You could see last week it was a great goal that he scored. He gives us that licence to go forward, he has been brilliant.”
