Fisher a catch for Pars

Tuesday, 16th Aug 2022

The move from Dundee re-unites Sam Fisher with James McPake, someone who has played a large part in his development.

Twenty one year old Sam Fisher arrived at Dunfermline on a season long loan from Dundee on 16th August. The central defender, who turned 21 last month, told the website:-

“As soon as I knew of the interest (from Dunfermline) I wanted it done as soon as possible because I know the size of the club and I have a few friends who are Dunfermline fans. I am no stranger to what they want to do.”

The move from Dundee re-unites Sam with James McPake, someone who has played a large part in his development. He explained:-

“I have worked with him in the past and I like the way he goes about his work. He demands a lot and I want to get back working with him again. I enjoyed the time before and hopefully we can have a good season together again.

“When I came in to Dundee under 18s, he was the under 18s manager. I have been there four or five years now so I know how he works, he knows how I play and I am really looking forward to working with him again.”

Sam was a regular with the Dundee Under 18s and Reserve teams during 2018/19 and was involved in the first team set up the following season.
He featured in pre-season and was on the bench in the Betfred Cup early in the 2019/20 season before joining East Kilbride on loan.

While at Dundee Sam has had three previous loan spells, one to East Kilbride that ended after one appearance because of an ACL injury and then two at Forfar some eleven months and twenty months later. In total he played in 23 matches for Forfar:-

“I have had three loans and they have probably not gone the way that I wanted them to go. I have had a lot of injuries, a couple of bad ones and a lot of niggly ones but I’m feeling really good now and hopefully that continues into the season. I want to play as many games as I can, win games and get this club back up.”

Normally played in central defence Sam claimed that he could also play at right back:-

“I am a defender who wants to get as many clean sheets as I can by preventing the ball going into my goal. On the other side I like to get the ball down, moving, drive out and play passes about the park. I can play either side centre back and I have played right back a few times but I normally see myself as a centre back.”

Sam had a very public first day as James McPake’s squad trained on Tuesday morning in front of an invited audience of season ticket holders at East End Park. He had only been there twice before with Dundee - one time in the stand, the other I was on the bench. Sam felt good to meet all his new team mates and see all the fans.

He played with recently arrived loanee from Dundee United, Chris Mochrie before at Gairdoch United when they were both much younger. He has since played against Chris, and against Dunfermline youth teams that included Lewis McCann and Matty Todd. Now he is looking forward to getting to know them a lot better as team mates.

After training Sam claimed that he always gives his all in training:-

“How you train is how you play in games. I don’t take it easy in training. It was nice from them to be here and see what goes on at training. I got a tour of the facilities here this morning, we have a great gym, great canteen, it’s a really good place for me to come to play my football.”

First stop in action he hopes is New Central Park this Saturday when Dunfermline face Kelty Hearts.

“There are a few big games in this league with Falkirk, Airdrie and Montrose. It is a really good competitive league and I am really looking forward to it.”
