Ashcroft extends stay with Athletic

Thursday, 4th May 2017

Lee Ashcroft:- "Usually these things take a bit of time but I am just happy to get it done quick.

Allan Johnston was delighted to secure the signing of central defender Lee Ashcroft for another season. The Pars gaffer told the website:-

"He is a young lad, you forget how young he is. He looks a lot older than he actually is. I think he has had a good first season and he is one who can still improve as well.

"It probably highlights how well he has done that the players voted him `Players` Player of the Year`. He is really popular with the boys and works really hard. We are delighted to get somebody of his quality to sign for another year."

Lee only missed one of the Pars matches all season and that was due to suspension. It could be said that it has been the most successful season thus far in his football career.

"I think there is more to come from Lee, he is at a great age, he is learning all the time and he has probably improved as the season went on. He has to continue doing that."

The 23 year old was just pleased to have signed the one year extension to his contract before the season ended, he told the website:-

"Usually these things take a bit of time but I am just happy to get it done quick. Hopefully we can go out, win our last game and go and enjoy that before coming back.

"Next season will be a good league and I think a lot of boys will be fancying their chances. It is definitely one to look forward to. It looks like Inverness will be coming down and maybe there will be another two new teams in the league.

"No matter what happens I think it will be a more open league next season. A lot of teams, especially ourselves will be fancying our chances. That was one of the main reasons they wanted me to stay, sign on and hopefully kick on."

The matches against the top three in this season`s campaign yielded few points but Lee felt that there were games where Dunfermline should have got the better of those opponents adding:-

"It has just not worked out and hopefully next year it will be our turn to get the results and a bit of luck against them."

Having started the season slowly Lee felt that a couple of results the other way around and the play off place could have been possible.

"We could have been right in the mix. It has just been one of those seasons but hopefully we can learn from that and have a good start."
