Penalties are academical for Pars

Thursday, 16th Feb 2017

"The boys who were brave enough to put their hands up to go and take those penalties didn`t score but no one is going to hold that against them.

Callum Morris felt defeat to Hamilton on Tuesday night was a right kick in the teeth. The big Geordie thought he had scored in the first tie on Saturday only for it to be disallowed for an incident off the ball. Then on Tuesday night in the replay he did score and although it gave the Fifers a lead until three minutes from the end of normal time it was not enough to win the cup tie. He told the website that it was hard to take:-

"It is tough going out on penalties in any cup at any stage, especially when I think that we have been the dominant team for both games. I say that but I think we needed to see both games out. It should have been done and dusted on Saturday but the boys gave everything and in the two good performances it was just a fine margin."

After 210 minutes of football it was to be penalties that would settle who would be going through to face Rangers at Ibrox. Callum continued:-

"We had chances to win both games and that is what it has come down to in the end. It is a sore one to take so late on in the game especially when I don`t think was a penalty."

The 27 year old was involved in the 87th minute penalty kick award and controversial as it was he commiserated with referee Craig Thomson`s tough job he did feel that the award was harsh:-

"It`s one of those, he has got a tough job out there Craig anyway with lots going on. I don`t think it was a penalty but both teams get it, they get it all season. Tough to take but the lads can hold their heads up after two decent games.

"It is not just about missing chances, I think the two goals that we conceded we could have stopped. There is not one player who you can lay the finger of blame on. As a team we have done brilliant over the two ties.

"If there is anyone sitting in the dressing room thinking that we are inferior to any of these clubs then that just proved the point that we are not. We have the players even in the league that we are in now, we should be looking up the table, at the top of the table. I think that will give belief to the boys for the rest of the league campaign."

Having recently been at SPL clubs Dundee United and Aberdeen Callum is under the impression that there isn`t much between Dunfermline and a lot of the SPL teams:-

"That kind of proved it to the boys. Obviously it is going to be a bit of a sickener for the next couple of days but we need to pick ourselves up. There are loads of positives to take from it and take it into the league campaign.

"Penalties are tough to go out on, but it was more about the performance for 90 minutes and extra time. The boys who were brave enough to put their hands up to go and take those penalties didn`t score but no one is going to hold that against them.

"Hopefully that can give us a kick start to another run. We can`t stay too down, we will pick ourselves up and go again next week in the Hibs game, that is how it is."
