Herron becomes a target man

Friday, 13th Jan 2017

John Herron is delighted that he will be a Dunfermline player for the remainder of the 2016-2017 season.

His loan period from Blackpool has been extended and with news of his agreed release from the League Two club at the end of the season, he has already had discussions with Pars manager Allan Johnston about next season. John said:-

"The main thing for me was to come and play games. I spoke to the management staff a couple of weeks after being here. For me it felt right. The main thing is that I am playing games and back to enjoying my football again."

The 22 year old who captained the Celtic youth team in the SFA Youth Cup final against Dunfermline three years ago signed for the Pars on the last day of August with the stated ambition to improve as a player. He feels that has begun at Dunfermline and is delighted to have his stay extended.

"I don`t want to go back down there and they have agreed to let me go for free in the summer. We have come to an agreement that way which is quite good.

"The gaffer has started talks already, him and Ross McArthur have spoken to my agent. Since arriving here I have expressed how much I like being here, the fans have played a big part in it and the squad here is excellent, we are all bonding which for me is a big thing as well. You never know."

John had been at Celtic from the age of 8 and was capped at every level from Under 15 to Under 21. He played alongside Paul McMullan, in that Celtic Youth Cup winning team and the two will now be together at Dunfermline until the end of the season.

John has shown in his eleven Dunfermline starts and two appearances off the bench that he is a box to box midfielder who likes to get forward. Although admitting there was a problem between him and the manager at Blackpool, he paid tribute to the club:-

"I am leaving a lot of nice people behind, people that I owe a lot to. I have been down recently to visit them and I will probably go down again. It is a big club, the fans were nice and the owner and his son were excellent with me. I will be forever thankful to them."

An ankle injury picked up at Ayr on 1st October kept John out of the team for over a month but he has been ever present since making his return against Raith Rovers on Bonfire night.

"I felt I came back well, played some games and then had another ankle knock that only kept me out for one game but since then I have been back in the team and back playing well. For me the main thing is playing well and helping the team.

"As much as you want to do well as an individual, the main thing is the team and I think the last ten games have been a good run. We put the behind us now and look forward to the next ten games. We have to try and better that."

The first hurdle is the home match against St Mirren on Saturday but John is approaching that with caution:-

"It is going to be a tough game. People look at it against the team at the bottom of the league and think that it is going to be a push over. You could see in the first game (in September) which was my first game and in the game over there that it is always tough. The whole league is tough but it will be a good game.

"The main change at St Mirren has been the manager and I think he is trying to get his point across. I have heard that he is good, so he will make a lot of changes, rally them together and push them in the same direction."
