Lewis left legless
Monday, 29th Aug 2016"I was going to put it in, you don`t dive three yards out. I wasn`t trying to win a penalty.
Lewis Spence was guarded when making his post Queen of the South match comments. As the match drew to an end with Dunfermline one goal down and a man down, their late push almost paid off but when in a goalscoring position Lewis was sent tumbling. He described the incident:-
"The shot went in and I just followed it in there using my natural instinct. I thought it was a good shot but it came back to me perfectly and I don`t know if it was a side challenge or a push but something just took me off my feet.
"I was going to put it in, you don`t dive three yards out. I wasn`t trying to win a penalty. Something cleaned me right out and I don`t think you can do that now. It doesn`t matter if you win the ball, he maybe came through and won the ball but he went through me. It is done now, the referee has maybe made a wrong decision but they have a hard job.
"I was raging and it was a bit frantic with the crowd. I ran to the linesman but he didn`t want to give me anything. The referee said that it wasn`t a penalty. He makes the decision and is not going to go back on his word.
"It was coming right on to my foot perfectly. I was right in the middle of the goal and I am not sure but the keeper was maybe still on his knees from the shot. Something has cleaned me out, I do not know which player and I can`t remember whether it got cleared off the line because I was on the deck.
"It is done now but we still can`t blame it all on that. We need to start games better and start winning. We are seventh in the table and before we know it we could be near the bottom. We need to get our fingers out."
The experience is much different from last season in League One when winning was a regular occurrence.
"It was brilliant when we were winning just about every game. It was great football and the fans were loving it. Now we are under a wee bit pressure after three defeats. It is something that we need to react to, we cannot just hide from it. It is still early in the season but I am sure we will pick it up when we get used to the league.
"All these teams have played in this league for five or six years now but we have a good enough squad so I am sure that we will definitely be up there."
Everyone acknowledges that Dunfermline have come close in their last three matches but they have ended up the losing side. Lewis continued:-
"There are fine margins. Our little mistakes are turning into their goals. Teams we are playing are not giving us mistakes, they are making us work for our goals. We need to start getting used to this league quick.
"We were missing Joe (Cardle) on Saturday, he is a big player for us but we have guys like Higginbotham, Gavin Reilly who are goalscorers. It will come.
"We have been training hard but starting games slow. We are coming back into games but it is wee mistakes and individual errors that are causing goals, it is not really brilliant play. It was a free kick on Saturday. Two mistakes at Hibs and last year we were getting away with these, no disrespect to the teams below but we are playing against higher calibre teams now.
"We want to be up top four. I believe if we get our act together, stick together and be solid at the back and take our chances as well then we will be up there."
