McCrae`s Battalion and Dunfermline
Forces TV have now released online the story of McCrae`s Battalion (16th Royal Scots), and the film includes some familiar faces (Garry Davidson, Donald Adamson and Ian Hunter all get to speak, with walk-on parts for several other Pars fans)
This is the story of how football and World War One were inter-connected, and much of the filming was done during the Heritage Trust`s recent WW1 tour to France and Belgium, organised in conjunction with McCrae`s Battalion Trust. The role of Heart of Midlothian FC was crucial in the McCrae’s story, but for perhaps the first time in many years the significance of Dunfermline is also recognised.
Two Dunfermline Athletic men (Jimmy Morton and Davie Izatt) were killed on 1 July 1916 when McCrae’s Battalion went “over the top” on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Their bodies were not found, and their names are recorded on the War Memorial in Dunfermline and on the Thiepval Memorial in France.
