Pars style suits striker

Monday, 11th Jul 2016

Michael Moffat is hoping that strong performances can secure his place in Allan Johnston`s team.

"It was good to be back playing on our home pitch and to get a good result against a good team. The way we play the strikers do as much work as everyone else in the team, it is hard work but it is a good way that we are playing. It is very attacking and we can be hard to break down when we don`t have the ball."

Michael had a very good game and he feels that the style suits his game:-

"Sometimes you drop deep and get on it. You get a wee bit more room to operate. With Gavin (Reilly) up front he likes playing on the shoulder the same as me. All the boys know the way we want to play and the manager has drummed it into us. It is a good style that we are playing and hopefully we can play some attractive football again and get some good goals and good wins."

A couple of the goals had assists from Michael and the opening goal from a corner was especially pleasing for the manager.

"He has said that we need to do more of that. We are quite a big team so he will be happy that one paid off that way. Then Geggan scored the second from the edge of the box and Joe the third after I slipped him in.

"I had a chance with my left foot that the keeper saved and one from the edge of the box that just went by the post, I thought that it was in - on another day it would have gone in but we are delighted with the three goals and the win."

Preparations are going well for the season starting a week on Tuesday against Arbroath. The Pars will play a closed doors match against Hamilton and Michael sees that as another good test of the level of preparedness.

"After that we have a week until the real stuff starts. We are raring to go, we cannot wait and looking forward to kicking off in the League Cup and then the League a week after it.

"Hearts was just a friendly match but you don`t want to be losing games. You want to win every game you play, it doesn`t matter who it is against. We beat Livingston last week and Hearts on Saturday - that is eight goals in two games.

"We played Partick Thistle as well and scored three against them even though we didn`t get the win, we are scoring a lot of goals. If we continue that form into the League we will do alright."

The manager is on record as saying he is on the look out for another two strikers but after scoring three against Premiership opponents Michael agreed that the team certainly knows how to find the net:-

"I think me and Gav have a good partnership going already. Sometimes when you play with boys you link up well with them. We compliment each other`s game but the manager is going to need to get a few in because we are still pretty light and up front is the main position. There are really only the two of us as recognised strikers. We have a few other boys who can play that position but I think you need a couple of different options if things aren`t working because we are fairly similar.

"Obviously we want to stake our claim to play every game and if we keep playing like that then the manager will hopefully find it tough to drop us."

The opening fixtures of this season are against the same two opponents as last season. Arbroath were the opening match in July last year and Cowdenbeath followed that. With 4-1 and 5-1 wins last season there is every opportunity to make comparisons. Michael agreed that the team did well in those matches but he will settle for any kind of win.

"If we can score a few goals it will help the confidence but I do not think we can go into matches against teams looking to score four or five.

"We just have to take it as it comes and hopefully get a good start because after that we play the two tougher teams - Inverness from the Premier League and Dundee United who have just been relegated. We want to get the six points on board before we play them. It is a competition that we want to get through in. It is going to be tough but we will be raring to go next week."

Good form in the League Cup would be a big positive going into the first Championship match against Dumbarton on 6th August. Michael played for a season at that level while a part timer at Ayr United but despite reaching two good cup runs, their league results failed to prevent them being relegated in the play offs. Michael feels Dunfermline can do much better:-

"This season we can aim for the top four rather than the bottom end of the table. If we play the way we can then I think we have a good chance. Look at the teams there last season - Falkirk, Raith Rovers - it will be tough. Hibs and Dundee United will be strong but after that then everybody is pretty similar. I just hope we can go on a run and get a bit of confidence going from a good start."
