Rhys McCabe signs new contract
Tuesday, 31st May 2016Rhys signs up to another year at Dunfermline.
Manager Allan Johnston was pleased to secure the signature of 23 year old Rhys McCabe. Rhys joined the Pars in September last year and made seven starts and eleven appearances off the bench in his first season at East End Park.
Midfielder Rhys McCabe was released from English Championship club, Sheffield Wednesday at the end of 2014-2015 season and trialled at St Johnstone and Hibs before deciding in September 2015 that his move back to Scotland should be to West Fife.
Rhys is a product of the Rangers youth programme and was considered as something of a hot prospect at Ibrox having made nine first-team appearances in the 2011/12 season. He made his Premier League debut on 3 March 2012, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2–1 defeat to Hearts.
Later that month he made his Old Firm debut in a 3–2 win over Celtic. McCabe made his debut for the Scotland Under 21 team in April 2012. He left Rangers in 2012 at the depths of their financial crisis to sign a three-year contract at Sheffield Wednesday.
Despite starting well in season 2012-13, the following season on 17 March 2014 after just three Sheffield Wednesday appearances he was loaned out to League Two Portsmouth on loan for the rest of the 2013-2014 season. In season 2014-15 he made three appearances off the bench totalling just over twenty minutes game time so came to Dunfermline Athletic in the hope that he can get his career back on track.
