Exciting times ahead for Geggs eleven
Thursday, 5th May 2016Turning point in the season was winning at Ayr in December
Leaving behind the euphoria of the Ladbrokes League One trophy presentation Andy Geggan sat down to reflect on his title winning season at Dunfermline:-
"At the end of my career this will be a season that I will remember best. The boys have made it a year that everybody can remember even if the gaffer is not fancying you and letting you go.
"I am not going to lie, it has been hard but it has been enjoyable. I think the boys have done really well and winning it was just fantastic."
Andy claimed that he was confident right from the start of the season that winning the league was a realistic target.
"The other teams might not have been and others just tried to shoot us down. Especially when we were at home, teams came here to a big stadium and a nice place to play and teams always turned up when they played us here.
"Peterhead made it difficult for us. Going there and to Ayr as well were hard places to go. The boys have taken care of everybody."
There was no point in the season where Andy and his teammates felt any doubt:-
"We had to keep going up to Christmas and once past that it could start telling where we are going to be. We won a lot of games over Christmas and into January I knew that we were going to go up."
Andy felt that the win at Ayr in December was the biggest of the season.
"Before the game we knew how big that turning point was going to be. I remember we had two good weeks of training going into it. I knew straight away that the boys were up for this. I knew if we got the victory it would be a massive turning point in the league.
"That was the turning point because from then on in we just romped everybody. Peterhead were hanging in there but we just had to concentrate on ourselves. At one point I was getting annoyed because every week they were winning, we were winning as well but it was not telling in anyway.
"We knew at one stage they would run out of games and they did, thanks to Cowdenbeath."
After holding Dunfermline to a 0-0 draw at Balmoor in January, Peterhead boss Jim McInally told the press that he felt Dunfermline eleven points better off, had too great a lead to be caught. Andy recalled a different comment:-
"I remember Jim McInally saying to his players that we would fold and they would have a chance of winning the league. Obviously as you do."
Andy felt that it was a fitting reward for fans who had followed Dunfermline both home and away that Saturday brought the first win of the season over the Blue Toon to finish the season on a high. Now he is ready to look ahead to next season:-
"I think it will be an exciting league no matter who comes up or goes down. I am looking forward to it and looking forward to seeing who the gaffer brings in. He has a lot of good players signed up already.
"I think we can do really well in the Championship, I want to be mid table or above. It doesn't matter who is in the league, we will go out there every week and try 100%. Hopefully the league won't lie by the end of the season."
With teams coming up against Dunfermline for the first time in a few seasons they will not know what to expect of the Championship new boys.
"That is why I am saying that it will be exciting. It will be good, it will be interesting."
