Martin's Championship ambition
Thursday, 14th Apr 2016Lewis is back right, left and centre
Lewis Martin spoke after putting the ink to his new contract:-
"I am obviously delighted to have been offered a new contract. I have not played since December, my first game was on Saturday there so hopefully since I have signed I will play the last three games and kick on next season.
"I was worried because I had not played recently. I thought I played well up until December. I have played right back, left back and centre back this year and thought I might have been offered a contract and thankfully I did.
"It is nice to have my future settled. I can train over the summer and be ready. It's a two year deal and that gives me security. We want to get the club back to where it belongs. In my first year I came on as a sub in the Championship against Morton but that is the only game I have played in at that level. Hopefully I can play and get a few games next year in the Championship."
It was only a week after his seventeenth birthday in April 2013 when Lewis made that debut at Cappielow but he sat on the bench and had to wait until December before getting a start. For someone who turned 20 only a week ago Lewis has already started an impressive 72 games for Dunfermline and he is keen to add to that.
"I played almost every game up until December when I got an illness. It is a viral infection that caused the muscle around my heart to inflame, then in my first training session back I pulled my hamstring so it was not my best.
"I still felt part of the title winning push. I was in the gym with Ryan Williamson and Callum Fordyce, I was in the changing room on match days wishing the boys well.
"The last game I played before my illness was against Ayr United and that put us top of the league and the boys have pushed on from there."
Lewis played at right back in the first two games against Stranraer, he featured back in the centre of the defence on his return last Saturday against Forfar Athletic and he hopes to be included at Stair Park adding:-
"The gaffer wants to keep on winning in the final games, whatever team he picks hopefully we can do that."
Of the Pars squad 20 year old Lewis is just the third first team squad player to have struck a deal for next season. Sean Murdoch, Ryan Williamson and youth keeper Cammy Gill signed last week and Lewis hopes more of his current team mates will follow suit.
