Paton's pointless place
Saturday, 30th Jan 2016Michael Paton:- "We are much better than that and we will pick it up for next week.
After Airdrieonians ended the Pars unbeaten run on Friday night a very disappointed Michael Paton spoke exclusively to this website:-
"We always look forward to playing at our home ground and in the first half I thought they were camped in and we dominated it. They got one chance and one goal. We are deeply disappointed but we pick ourselves up and go again because we know that we are much better than that."
The first half stats showed possession, shots on targets and corner count all weighted to the home side yet they trailed 1-0 at half time. The 26 year old who joined Dunfermline at the start of this season, thought that his team got chances at setpieces:-
"We got big boys in the box and maybe should have got one or two headers out of that. I don't think we troubled their keeper too much but with chances like that we really have to."
Michael who scored eleven goals while at Queen of the South, had a pretty good chance himself when in the second half Ryan Wallace sent a good delivery in from the left for him:-
"It was a great bit of work from Ryan, it came to me with a skip and a bounce. I caught it but not as cleanly as I wanted. It did not have as much power but if you get it on target you never know what will happen. I don't think we worked their keeper as much as we normally do to teams here and we paid the consequences for that."
Airdrieonians were pinned back in their own half for most of the second half. They wasted time at every opportunity and we're happy to hold out for a 1-0 victory. Michael said that it was very difficult playing against teams like that:-
"You get the ball half way into their half, you turn and you find you have the whole team to break down. We know teams come here and try to do that. Try to frustrate us, try and stop us scoring goals because we are good on the counterattack and scoring fast goals.
"We are much better than that and we will pick it up for next week. After drawing last week we wanted three points. Last week we came away with a draw that felt like a defeat but today was a defeat and a hard one to take."
