McKay says aye to Pars
Friday, 8th Jan 2016Brad McKay was delighted to arrive at East End Park since he was not getting as many games as he wanted at the Perth club.
The 22 year old who has joined Dunfermline on loan from St Johnstone until the end of the season spoke exclusively to this website:-
"I was enjoying the training but the same as any player, not playing games is the worst part after working hard in the gym and training hard in training. I was not getting rewards for that and obviously when I found out that Dunfermline were interested in me I didn't have to think twice. They are doing well and they are a massive club so I was excited to come and sign.
"The manager was keen to get me in, I spoke to him on the phone and he was saying that he had a fair few out in defence through injuries so that said to me that I have a chance to go in and if I do well I will keep my place.
"It is just one of those things in football if the players get injured the manager needs to do something. I am sure the boys will understand that. With the January window opening it is probably good timing to bring somebody in."
After 40 appearances for Hearts, what can we expect from Brad McKay?
"First and foremost I am very passionate about the game, I love football. I am a good player and like to pass the ball. One of my strengths is that I am a good passer of the ball, a good user of the ball and I just want to start playing games again to get my confidence back. Once I do that hopefully I can kick on."
What is your favoured position?
"I am a right sided centre back but strangely enough I enjoy playing left centre back. I can also play right back and have sat in holding mid position as well at times. I am very versatile and can play different positions."
Having won a champions medal last season at Hearts there is an opportunity to win another this season with Dunfermline if results can continue to go in the Pars favour.
"I keep a close eye on all the leagues and know that Dunfermline are scoring a lot of goals and keeping a lot of clean sheets. My main priority is to help keep that going and clean sheets win matches."
Brad trained with his new team mates on Thursday and Friday for the first time and he claimed that he was just keen to play for the manager and the Dunfermline fans:-
"The one thing that I have really missed is being involved on the match day. It is difficult sitting in the stands on a Saturday after training hard all week."
Brad played against Dunfermline 20s for St Johnstone back in October and he is now available for Saturday's William Hill Scottish Cup tie against Ross County.
"I spoke to Tommy Wright, the manager at St Johnstone and he said that it would be fine for me to come on loan here. Some managers don't like you getting cup tied but he has got seven or eight defenders in his squad so I think he is more than covered in my position. I am just glad that I can come straight in and play."
Manager Allan Johnston was delighted to bring Brad McKay in especially since he has played a lot of games at a higher level.
"He should be a good addition for us and he can play full back as well. He gives us good cover and hopefully he can do well.
"He is good on the ball, we could even see that in training today. He is a good passer and he has played a lot of first team games with Hearts. Obviously he has been a wee bit frustrated this year by not getting into the St Johnstone first team but he is just desperate to come here and do well.
"I am sure that he will be a good addition to the squad, he is only a young lad and obviously we are going to have a really young back four - well apart from Jason (Talbot). They have played a lot of first team games.
"Brad is desperate to come here and do well. That is the type of player that we want to attract to the club. He has been playing 20s games so his fitness should not be a problem. Marc McAusland has been doing well so when he gets fit again it will give us more competition for places."
Really short of defenders, there is no doubt that the new signing will be in the squad to face Ross County.
