Rooney's Christmas number one
Monday, 21st Dec 2015Shaun's first Pars goal took Dunfermline six points clear at the top of Ladbrokes League One
Shaun Rooney's grin was as wide as Santa's when he spoke to the media after scoring the Pars winning goal against Stenhousemuir on Saturday.
"I am happy to get my first goal for the club, it's the fifth goal of my professional career so I was buzzing. It is probably my best one since the others have just been tap ins.
"I thought I was going to smash it, then I thought 'no it will go over the bar if I smash it' so I just side footed it. I didn't see it hit the back of the net but I didn't see it come back out so I thought it was a goal and just ran away."
Having scored one Shaun almost scored another but the goalkeeper saved from point blank range:-
"It just hit the goalkeeper's head and got cleared. I tried to get on the rebound but it just did not happen for us. I am happy with the 1-0 win and three points. Top of the league for Christmas is nice.
"With the league being so tight it is nice to be six points clear and a little gap now. Hopefully we can press on."
It had not looked so good as Shaun watched the first half from the subs' bench:-
"They were the better side and pushing on a bit better but then in the second half we came out and performed a bit better. Towards the end we were thinking that it was going to be nothing each, one of those days where we miss everything but then we scored. One chance is all you need."
Shaun's appearance on Saturday was his third off the bench for Dunfermline to go with his three first team starts so far. In the under 20s he has been used at centre half but the 19 year old said "I do prefer right back but centre half I like too."
