The latest Dunfermline signing is 23-year-old Rhys McCabe. The midfielder was released from Championship club, Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season and has recently trialled at St Johnstone and Hibs while in search of a move back to Scotland. Rhys played the full 90 minutes of the Pars SPFL Development League 2-0 home win over Hearts earlier this month.
Rhys is a product of the Rangers youth programme and was considered as something of a hot prospect at Ibrox having made nine first-team appearances in the 2011/12 season. He made his Premier League debut on 3 March 2012, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2–1 defeat to Hearts.
Later that month he made his Old Firm debut in a 3–2 win over Celtic. McCabe made his debut for the Scotland Under 21 team in April 2012. He left Rangers in 2012 at the depths of their financial crisis to sign a three-year contract at Sheffield Wednesday.
His first goal for Sheffield Wednesday was an edge of the box screamer from a corner against Charlton Athletic on 22 December 2012. The goal was subsequently voted goal of the day on Sky Sports News but was to be one of only two in his 36 appearances for the Owls.
On 17 March 2014 after just three Sheffield Wednesday appearances he was loaned out to League Two Portsmouth on loan for the rest of the 2013-2014 season only to be recalled early from his loan spell on 24 April 2014. Last season he made three appearances off the bench totalling just over twenty minutes game time.
