This charity match attracted many icons of Scottish football both on the park and in hospitality.
"We are here today because of the 'special one'. He had an eye for talent and he developed players through the reserve team" - Bertie Auld (pre match).
Bright sunshine, Hoopy and Sammy The Tammy and a sizeable East End Park crowd welcomed the players on to an immaculate looking playing surface. 19 Pars players and 18 Celtic players lined up across the centre circle flanked by their respective managers, David Moyes and Murdo MacLeod.
There was thirty seconds applause in appreciation of Jock Stein before Istvan Kozma and Stevie Crawford got the game underway. Hamish French was the first to try a shot but that was blocked. Marco Ruitenbeek was the first keeper called into action to fist away a powerful effort from 15 yards by Mark Burchill.
Burchill had two more good opportunities, one that he crashed narrowly over the crossbar and the over that he toe poked into the McCathie Stand while under pressure from Scott Wilson.
On 18 minutes Barry Nicholson received the ball on halfway and he switched it wide to Jason Dair who produces a great ball into the six yard box that just evades French.
Four minutes later it required a fantastic save from Jonathan Gould to keep out an Andy Tod header from a Stevie Crawford cross from the right byeline.
Scott Wilson was the first Pars legend to be subbed in 35 minutes for John Potter and then three minutes later auction winner, Paul Fitzgerald replaced Istvan Kozma who had shown class with his ever touch.
The half time whistle was possibly a great relief for those on the park but for those watching it had been epic entertainment. Stand outs - Stevie Crawford, Barry Nicholson and Mark Burchill. Hamish French put in a characteristically good shift.
Half time: Dunfermline 0 Celtic 0
The second half saw the Pars introduce Stewart Petrie, Martin Hardie and David Bingham in place of Hamish French, Stevie Crawford andf Barry Nicholson. Both sides found the pace more appropriate for a Sunday afternoon with slightly less energy in the game.
Egged on by the crowd Hardie tried an early shot and Jack a long range effort that did not take off. In between Marco Ruitenbeek came out to hold a dangerous ball into the centre of his box.
Celtic withdrew Simon Donnelly and Stilyian Petrov ten minutes into the second half to make room for James McAvoy and Gianni Capaldi while at the same time John Watson replaced Ross Jack.
Pars manager Allan Johnston replaced Gary Mason and in 64 minutes his run outside Petrie opened up the space for a Petrie pass to David Bingham and his rocket of a shot was tipped over by Rab Douglas. Andrius Skerla made the big former internationalist show off his class with a great save from the most capped Lithuanian of all time.
The opening goal was not far away however and to the delight of the home crowd it was from "Super" John WATSON. The Pars favourite drew Douglas and crashed the ball into the far side of the net. 1-0 Sheer class!
Thomson, Crawford and Nicholson returned for the Pars in 71 minutes and within four minutes the home side were two up. This time David BINGHAM had lots of time to stroke the ball past big Rab from the edge of the box for 2-0.
Andy Tod had another header, ghosting in at the left goalpost only to be denied by Douglas. At the other end Marco saved from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink in 83 and 87. Chris Sutton rattled the crossbar as Celtic pushed for a goal but it was to end 2-0.
A great turn out for a great cause and great entertainment.
