Callum Fordyce honoured with captaincy

Callum Fordyce believes that it is a great privilege to captain a club of Dunfermline's size. The 23 year old told the website:- "It is a massive club to be captain of. I am really enjoying it and we are doing well in the games."

The only preparation Callum has had for the role bestowed upon him by Allan Johnston was as captain of the Livingston youth team.

"I need to look after the boys a wee bit more, make sure things are ok and on the park just being a leader and speaking to the ref. Organising about you is a big part of it especially being on the park as a communicator. I think that plays a major part.

"I think as a defender you can see the full park and can organise people. When you are the last line of defence it is your job to make sure that everybody is in the right position."

Fordyce made over 100 first team appearances in his five year spell at Livingston, including all but one of the club's league games last season. Last season Callum played alongside Jason Talbot who wore the the captain's armband. Now the pair have joined the Pars the role has been passed on but Jason has told Callum that he is happy to be his mentor. Last season's Dunfermline captains Andy Geggan and Josh Falkingham could also be in the team so there will be no shortage of encouragement on the field. Callum continued:-

"Jason is always there if I need any advice. Leaders on the park is the most important thing no matter who is wearing the armband. These guys who have been captains as well will always have that natural communication level that maybe some boys don't have at the moment."

The captain has had a good start to his leadership with cup wins at Arbroath and then against Cowdenbeath. Callum was delighted to win the first home game last Saturday:-

"To be a derby it was good just to put a marker down early doors. Throughout the game we were brilliant, the game could have been over at half time, we could have had three or four more. As soon as we got the first goal early in the second half we just went on front there. When they got a man sent off it made our job a wee bit easier. We just have to keep that going.

"Cowdenbeath are one of the main contenders for the league so it was always going to be a competitive match. The atmosphere was great and the boys handled it really well. The crowd gave us that extra boost that you need during the game."

Next up is the league opener against Brechin City and it will be Callum's first senior match at Glebe Park:-

"It will be a new experience for myself. You have to go places like that and if you are going to win league titles, get a result there. I am really looking forward to it. We are confident, the boys are flying and buzzing about. Long may it continue, if we do our jobs properly I really cannot see us going too far wrong.

"There will be spells in games when we might not be on top but the way that we are playing and the way we are training. You have to be confident going into Saturday and for the rest of the season.
