Gregor Buchanan returned to the Dunfermline Athletic team after missing the match against Morton while serving a one match suspension.

With Josh Falkingham on the bench it was Gregor who signed from Airdrieonians in the summer, who led the Pars on to the pitch at Somerset Park. Speaking exclusively to the website he described his feelings:-

"It was an honour to lead the team out, Dunfermline is a massive club so from my own point of view it was a big day for me but I just wanted to make sure that we got the result today. It wasn't about being pretty or us scoring so many goals, it was just about making sure that we got three points on the board. Hopefully we can now kick on and go on that run that we said that we would."

Gregor certainly portrayed all the attributes of a leader coming closest to scoring twice in the first half and then again in the second before Andy Geggan eventually scored the Fifers opener on 66 minutes.

"I was unlucky when the keeper had a good save and then the second one was headed off the line. The chance in the second half would probably have been the goal of the season if it had gone in. The keeper made a good save for two of them and off the line for the other one, you can't do much more than that. On another day I could probably walk away with a hat trick but today it wasn't to be."

With chances not being converted it might have looked like the usual story for Dunfermline, plenty of pressure but no goals. The 24 year old agreed that it did feel a bit like that but argued otherwise:-

"There is a renewed bit of belief in the squad, we have added some good players. At the start of the season we were playing some good stuff but we have had to adapt as the pitches are not as good as they were at the start of the season. The weather is always a factor but I think we controlled the game from start to finish.

"They had maybe a ten minute spell but apart from that it was an all round good performance. As I say, today was all about getting three points on the board and we did that."

Andy Geggan's 66th minute goal was welcome but the stand in captain felt more relieved when David Hopkirk scored the second in what was the first minute of the five added at the end.

"It gave us something to hold on to but the second one was more of a good worked goal. It was a good finish by Hoppy. He made a great debut and to get the goal as well is hopefully something he can take into the next game in a couple of weeks."

The deal to bring 22 year old David Hopkirk from Annan Athletic was only completed at tea time on Friday, so for him and his new team mates it was a case of first meetings as they came together to face Ayr United, Gregor continued:-

"We knew who he was because we had played against him but it was the first time that we had met him. To go straight into the team obviously the manager had belief in his ability, he knew that he could go right in and I thought he was superb. He got at their defence and worked hard. To get his goal was credit to him and I told him before the game if we worked hard and did the job he would stay in the team in a couple of weeks."
