Buchanan says there's nothing to fear
Saturday, 29th Nov 2014"I am delighted to get on the scoresheet and I thought that it would have been the winning goal in the end.
For 80 minutes of the William Hill Scottish Cup tie at Stranraer, things were going well for Dunfermline. Gregor Buchanan had added to Andy Geggan's first half goal to put the Fifers into a two goal lead but there was still thirty minutes to go. Speaking to this website Gregor agreed that it was a great team performance.
"I thought we played really well and it is a tough place to come, it doesn't really suit the football we usually play but I thought the boys were excellent. We battered into tackles, won our aerial battles and I really couldn't see them scoring.
"It was a bit of a freak goal and everybody that plays in football knows that when a team gets a goal it gives them a lift. 2-0 is a funny scoreline, obviously you are hoping to get the third but the third goal went to them and it was not easy to hang on.
"They were putting a lot of good balls into the box and although we defended really well it was disappointing to lose another."
That second goal was also a bit of a freak and Gregor described it from the moment he picked up a 94th minute yellow card:-
"I thought I got the ball but the referee thought it was a wee bit reckless so he gave the free kick. Then it went for a corner and we had defended a couple really well but to be fair, it was a good ball into the box that just bounced off Andy Geggan's head.
"You can be disappointed but we have to be positive and go back to East End and hopefully win the game there."
Prior to that Gregor had enjoyed celebrating just his second goal for the Pars. His first was in the Scottish League Cup match against Annan Athletic on 2nd August and he had been getting ribbed for not hitting the net of late.
"It was a nice wee glancing header into the corner so I was delighted. I should have scored a few more than I have this season and the gaffer, Potts and Neil have been at me to do better when I am in the box. I am delighted to get on the scoresheet and I thought that it would have been the winning goal in the end. That's football isn't it.
"We probably should have had the game won, we were comfortable. It wasn't as though we were going under the cosh, I don't think our goalie had many saves to make - maybe one in the first half - but they got a freak goal and then an own goal at the end.
"We are disappointed but we will kick on from here and go again. We are trying to make East End a bit of a fortress and I feel that we definitely have the advantage. The way we played on Saturday, we have nothing to fear against Stranraer. It is a bigger pitch and suits our game style. We need to win the game and get into the next round."
Gregor hopes that the cup performance can be carried into the league campaign where Stranraer are equal on points with the Pars who sit third above the Galloway team on goal difference.
"Sometimes these kind of games can give you attitude, the kick up the butt that you need. The boys will be positive after this cup tie, we cannot go around with our heads down because we did play well."
