Two for Ugwu
Monday, 25th Aug 2014Gozie Ugwu had a great day on Saturday scoring twice in Dunfermline's three nil win over Airdrieonians.
The 21 year old viewed it as more than just a great game for him-
"A great day for the team really. It kick starts our season now with the win that we deserve and we are all really happy.
"The first one I nearly missed but lucky enough it went in. It was a great cross from Faissal that I nearly missed but fortunately I scored. The second one I was really happy with, I got past my man to tuck it away. I should have had a hat trick really. I was a bit unsure about the offside 'goal' that they didn't give me but I am still happy with my two goals and the win.
"We have been working hard in training with my game and I am starting to feel fitter now. Hopefully I can keep getting stronger and stronger."
Gozie is pleased to have signed for Dunfermline after an uncertain summer after being released by Reading:-
"I have been training on my own and trying to do my best in the gym but it is not the same as training with a team. When I arrived I was a bit unfit but you can see now that I am getting fitter every week and I am feeling good.
"I am pleased with the opportunity to play here; I have heard good things about the gaffer and the team. They are a good young team, ambitious team and I just wanted to be a part of that."
Gozie's inclusion in the starting line up led to an altered role for Faissal El Bakhtaoui, playing wider and predominantly on the right. It was Faissal who crossed the ball for the opening goal and the one that was chalked off for offside. The big Englishman commented:-
"You could see that he was a problem all game really until he came off. He whipped in some great crosses especially for my first goal. He is always a threat especially when he is running at his man on the wing. He looked good out there."
There was a good chance near the end that Gozie set up for Ross Forbes. Should he have scored?
"I will give him the benefit of the doubt really, it was a tight angle. To be fair it was a great movement and you could see that we were enjoying ourselves and playing good football."
Now that he is off the mark, Gozie is hoping to score in every game, he added:-
"I can gain confidence from this and carry on scoring. I am a centre forward because of my size and physical attributes. I can come short or play with my back to goal or also because I am powerful and quite quick, I can also go in behind which I prefer. I like to switch it up and try and help the team in any way I can."
