Having been brought up in Hamilton, Stephen had a spell with Celtic Boys Club before joining Hearts at the age of 16. After 105 matches with Hearts scoring 9 goals Stephen joined Dunfermline on 26th January 2006 and made his debut when he came on in the home match against Motherwell the following day.

The 6'1" midfielder started only three of the 13 matches he appeared in for Hearts in season 2005-06. In just over 500 minutes on the field he scored one goal against Hibs at the start of the season. Since he played in both the CIS Insurance Cup matches for Hearts in season 2005-06  v Queens Park and Livingston he was cup tied and could not play in the big CIS Insurance Final on Sunday 19th March.

Signed a two year contract on his wedding day in the summer of 2006.  Joint top scorer for the Pars in 2006-07.  Left at the end of the 2007-08 season.

61 starts and eleven times off the bench for Dunfermline. Goals - 9.
