Andy first joined Dunfermline when Bert Paton got him to sign from junior outfit Kelty Hearts in November 1993. He played his debut first team match just one month later and he very quickly became a favourite with the fans, securing a regular place in the side.

His first league appearance for Dunfermline in a First Division match was against Morton at Cappielow on 4th December 1993.

Although starting as a midfielder, he was tried in a number of positions before settling in as a centre-half. By 2000, Jimmy Calderwood was in charge and it seemed that there was to be no place for Andy in the side, so, after 264 appearances and 38 goals for the Pars, he went on loan to Stockport County in October 2000. Just when it looked as a deal would be struck, the whole thing fell through and he returned to Dunfermline in January 2001.

The following season he started life on loan to Bradford City, and so impressed were they with the Pars stopper that they paid a six-figure fee for his permanent transfer in November 2001. Jim Jefferies didn't last too long as Bradford boss, and that seriously affected his chances. The Yorkshire club were in dire financial straits and once Andy reached 25 first team appearances, Bradford would be due Dunfermline a further £25,000. They simply weren't prepared to pay it and Andy went on loan to Hearts, then Dundee United as Bradford attempted to cut costs.

A very popular player, Andy has fitted in well since his return to his first club and was 2004-2005 season's top goalscorer.

He  played under seven different managers at East End Park - Bert Paton, Dick Campbell, caretaker manager Jimmy Nicholl, Jimmy Calderwood, Davie Hay, Jim Leishman and Stephen Kenny.

Made his 300th league appearances for the Pars on 19th November 2005 against Livingston.  After his testimonial year in 2006-07 was released.

Andy made 335 starts and 48 appearances as sub in first team matches for the Pars, and had scored 50 goals.

Signed for Raith Rovers after leaving Dunfermline, subsequently played at Forfar before joining the police.
