Preview Airdrieonians
Wednesday, 18th Sep 2013SPFL League One
In May this year Airdrie United were already relegated when they arrived at East End Park to face a Dunfermline side that needed to win to ensure they avoided the play offs. Things went wrong in that game when Liam Coogans sent the visitors into the lead just 53 seconds into the second half. Ryan Thomson equalised with more than 30 minutes to go but Willie McLaren destroyed the Pars hopes to secure a 2-1 win.
Some would say that just consequence for the inability to defeat an already sunk team would be a place in the First Division Play offs but Airdrie United had been a problem to the Pars all season. When they came to East End Park earlier that season in January, they came to play a team that was top of the league. The Diamonds left with three points after a 3-1 win.
Then when the Pars travelled to the Excelsior Stadium on 9th March Airdrie were ahead before Ryan Wallace and Andy Kirk hit back to salvage a point for the Fifers. In all their guises the Lanarkshire club have always been fairly close to Dunfermline, there have been 101 league games with Airdrie having 35 wins to the Pars 36.

Airdrie United have now won their last two matches at East End Park and their first two wins there since January 2006. That was in the very first game at East End Park a 4-3 defeat in the 2005-2006 Scottish Cup. The Pars looked as good as through that day until an 89th minute penalty and a 92nd minute winner. The Diamonds team that day included a 29 year old Martin Hardie and a 21 year old Willie McLaren who is back at Airdrie after stints at St Johnstone, Clyde and Queen of the South.
