Jim Jefferies Post Brechin

Saturday, 14th Sep 2013

14/09/13: - "For me it is two points dropped. Brechin were wasting a bit of time near the end to settle for a point.

the game should have been out of sight by half time

Listen to this interview
Jim Jefferies
was angry that his side had failed to return from Brechin without three points:-

"We were so far in front, particularly in the first half but we did not kill them off. We needed a second goal - they are a young team and sometimes you have to learn that you cannot always be on top. Not even the best teams in the world can be on top for the whole ninety minutes, the other team always gets a wee spell.

"We had the biggest spell of being in charge of the game but didn't kill them off. Then you run the risk, when they have their spell, of not seeing it out. We lost a sloppy goal - a bread and butter corner, we had dealt with them well all day but that one time that you switch off. The ball was bouncing about the six yard box before it was finally put in.

"We had plenty chances to clear it but for me there was some great build up play but in that final third we just lacked. We should have been a bit more clinical because there were some great balls coming in to the back post. We were not strong and brave enough with the desire to go in there and get on the end of them like we should have been.

"They have to learn that when these opportunities come along that they have to stick them away. We could have made that a very comfortable victory but while it is 1-0 the other team will always get a chance and when they got a chance, they scored.

"They then got the lift and they looked more like winning than we did. But the game should have been out of sight by half time anyway. We should have walked in 3-0 up. I cannot for the life of me understand why the referee never gave a penalty in the opening minutes of the game when Josh Falkingham was clearly up ended on the edge of the box.

Josh Falkingham v Brechin City

"It was the same type of foul that was given after that for the same type of incident that should have been given in the earlier part of the game. Josh got one near the end when Hubby made the goalie make a great save but that was the same foul. The first one was inside the box.

"If the boy comes through and sweeps your feet away if it is inside the box then, it is a clear penalty. I cannot understand three other incidents similar yet he gave a free kick in every one of them but not the one when it mattered. It is easy to give free kicks when it is outside the box but that was crucial one there and if we had got off to the fast start who knows what would have gone on from there.

Jim Jefferies & Ryan Wallace

"We have ourselves to blame because we were so far in front in the game, playing well, couldn't fault them again - they were terrific the way they played and passed the ball particularly in the first half but we should have killed them off. If you don't you run the risk of them coming back. For me it is two points dropped. Brechin were wasting a bit of time near the end to settle for a point.

"They will even admit that they were outplayed for most of that game, they scored when they had their best spell."
