East End Park Baby
Tuesday, 23rd Oct 2012Little Sophie makes her first appearance for the Pars!
On the night of Thursday 4th October, Dunfermline lass, Stephanie McPhee went into labour and decided to get in the car with her partner, Paul Rowley, and in-laws, Karen and Rik Walter and drive to the hospital rather than wait for the ambulance to come.
Just as they were racing past East End Park in the direction of the maternity unit, Stephanie's full waters broke and she began to push. They quickly pulled over outside the stadium and Paul dialled 999 in a panic! Luckily Stephanie's Mother-in-Law decided to take matters into her own hands, "I could see the baby was coming and there was no stopping it! I listened as my husband relayed the instructions from the paramedic on the other end of the phone and just did my best to try to stay calm" Karen said.
With no training in midwifery and only a cool head and a steady pair of hands, Granny delivered her new granddaughter carefully into the world in the back of their car outside East End Park. At 7.23pm that night, beautiful baby Sophie, 6lbs 10ozs, was safe in the arms of her very relieved Mum just as the ambulance screeched to a halt on the Halbeath Road.
Karen added, "I've never done anything like this before but I am very close to my daughter-in-law, there's a lot of trust there and I'm just really glad my husband and I could help her and the baby. That's eight grandchildren we have now altogether! This will be a night we will always remember, we're very proud of our wee Sophie."
Congratulations to very proud parents, Stephanie and Paul and a massive well done to Granny, Karen Walter from everyone at DAFC!
