Spread the word urges Jefferies
Friday, 19th Oct 201220/10/12: JJ - Fans have to be able to enjoy what they are watching.
After coming back from 2-0 down at Falkirk in the last game, finding out that it meant going top of the First Division table was a delight for all involved . Jim Jefferies is now hoping that the qualities that saved the day in the local derby can continue as the season progresses, starting with Saturday's game against on form Morton:-
"We showed a lot of character. I think we were a little bit disappointed because if we had another 10 minutes we might have gone on to win the game. There was a little bit of a silence in the dressing room after the game but I had to remind them it was like a win for us - coming back from 2-0 down away from home and then hearing the icing on the cake that Partick Thistle didn't win and it was enough to put us top of the league on goal difference.
It turned out a very good day but Jim felt that the Pars were always in the game, had chances to score and it was a good advert for the First Division. He also played tribute to the 1600 strong travelling support at the Falkirk Stadium:-
"The fans were terrific and I think they appreciated that we didn't let it slip away, we didn't let our heads get down, and they showed character to come back. We'd not been in that position yet - they were asked questions and I think they answered them.
"We've always consistently said we want to be up there challenging. We've never shouted that we're going to win it because it's a completely new side, there's a lot of unknown players who have moved up a division and to try and take on the mantle but there's an expectation that the club should always be there challenging."
The victory away to Airdrie on the last Saturday in August is considered by Jefferies as a milestone in his team's emergence:-
"We played very well against Airdrie - it would have been a travesty if we hadn't won that game because we were encamped in their half but it doesn't matter when you get the goals as long as you win the game.
"It might have been a wee turning point but probably the turning point was that we brought in Callum Morris who didn't play in the early games, Andy Geggan was moved from right back into midfield, Jordan McMillan moved from midfield back to his normal position at right back and Ryan Wallace missed the start of the season because of a hamstring injury.
"I think that was a defining moment, not the just game but getting these players back. From then on we've just kept improving and improving, and I hope we keep improving."
Jim Jefferies hoped that the improved form will bring back the crowds to East End Park and he praised those that have made the effort already this season:-
"The fans have been terrific and if we keep playing the way we are the message will soon get around. We already know that there are some fans who have been at our games and they haven't been for a couple of years but they are raving about us. When you get them back you've got to keep them back and they'll be spreading the word around that they are enjoying watching the games.
"The feedback I get is that that's the case and we've not to let them down now and make sure that the ones who hadn't been for a while stay there. The only way we can do that is if they enjoy what they are watching. The secret is trying to win games as well as playing well, and right now I think we're doing both."
