Dowie off the duck
Sunday, 26th Aug 2012"It is my first goal for Dunfermline and it has been a long time coming.
Andy Dowie was delighted that his 80th minute strike on Saturday at Airdrie got him off the duck as a Dunfermline player. Speaking after the match the 29 year old revealed that his last goal had been back in October 2008:-
"It is my first goal for Dunfermline and it has been a long time coming. I had a decent record of scoring goals up at Ross County but they have deserted me for a good few years now."
His first Pars goal has taken 106 games to come along and it took Dunfermline 80 minutes against Airdrie United for this maiden goal to come along:-
"We were pushing and pushing in the second half, pinning them back for a good spell so I felt that the goal was coming and I was delighted that I got it."
Jim Jefferies was far from happy with his players at half time revealed Andy:-
"He went through us and we deserved it to be honest but we showed the right reaction to it in the second half which was pleasing. A late equaliser was on the cards. Andy Barrowman missed a good chance just before the goal.
"I couldn't believe it when it hit the net and wondered 'what do I do now?' I knew that the Manager still wouldn't be happy with a draw so we were pushing for a victory and just delighted that we got it."
Andy Dowie is the first Dunfermline central defender to score since Chris Higgins in April 2011 against Queen of the South, he continued:-
"You need a wee bit of luck scoring from a corner; as a defender going forward you need to make a run and hope that the ball just falls to you. Nine times out of ten it doesn't but when it does you need to try and take it. I was quite fortunate because I didn't really know too much about it. It fell for me and I hit it. It came straight back out as if the net was in line with the line."
The defender admits that he would like to chip in with few more goals this season but this first goal since joining the club in the summer of 2009 is important to him since Gerry McCabe has been ribbing him for long enough, "I think he owes be a tenner now" joked Andy.
He feels that kind of mettle that won the game is just what Dunfermline need to be demonstrating if they hope to be up there pushing for promotion:-
"Airdrie made it tough for us but I do believe that we should be coming to places like this and taking the three points. We made hard work of it and some of the boys are still getting used to how each other play. Hopefully as the season goes on we will get stronger."
"Ryan Wallace did well when he came on. He has been unlucky with a hamstring injury that has been keeping him back a bit and it was good to have him back in the team."
