No doubt for double Don
Monday, 24th Feb 2014It was good to get the third goal because 2-0 is always a sticky situation
"We played very well and it was a good performance" claimed Lawrence Shankland. He felt that a 3-0 win over Ayr United was a very good result, and scoring twice took his tally to five goals in 474 minutes on the park. Whatsmore he sees no reason why he can't get another five this season:-
"I take every game as it comes and concentrate on my performances as well. It is not just about goalscoring, I am trying to play well and work hard for the team."
Asked if he could reach double figures he said that he was ambitious:-
"I would say aye, if not I hope that there are a few assists in there to pick the team up and get results."
The striker who is on loan until the end of the season (and that includes the play offs if necessary) described his goals against Ayr:-
"The first one came from a good shot from Ross Forbes, the goalie got a hand to it and it came off the post. Good strikers follow in and score, so I made sure it was in not out before anybody could moan for not scoring it. I put it over the line because I think there was a covering defender. I just made sure.
"The second goal was just one on one where I managed to get the space and fire it into the top corner, thankfully it went in. That goal seemed to kill it off and relieved a bit of pressure because Ayr did start coming back into it with a bit of the play. It was good to get the third goal because 2-0 is always a sticky situation - one goal changes the game so to get the third one was good.
After Lawrence accepted the tap in for the second Dunfermline goal there were words between Ross Forbes and Lawrence, he explained:-
"He thought that it was in to start with and I had to be the bearer of bad news, tell him that it wasn't in and that I had scored. It is a team game and it doesn't really matter who scores as long as the ball hits the net and we get the results."
The 19 year old admitted that there was healthy competition among the strikers at the club:-
"There is really good competition, we are all good players to be here so it is good to have the competition to make sure that you play well, score when you can when you get the chance. Even the subs when they come on must make sure that they perform so that we give ourselves the best shout to get a shot next week. Ryan Wallace is a good player, he has played most of the games this season and he was on the bench. Maybe it was just a rest, we don't know."
There is a need now for the team to keep firing on all cylinders and seal the first play off place, Lawrence:-
"We need to be really disciplined now, keep winning and keep getting results. It shouldn't really matter what anybody else does round about us; if we keep winning the points they won't be able to catch us. We need to make sure we turn up every week playing as well as we can. Against Ayr we worked really hard as a team, I thought we all played well."
For those who wondered, Mark Shankland who played for Ayr on Saturday is not related to Lawrence!
