Shankland's pointless exercise

Sunday, 26th Jan 2014

"We need to learn to be winners."

Lawrence Shankland

Lawrence Shankland shot the Pars into the lead on Saturday but his goal meant nothing in the end after Brechin City came back to win the match in the last minute. Talking after the game the on loan Aberdeen player told the website:-

"We are very disappointed with the result. We played well at times but it was disappointing to lose the goals that we did quite easily. You are not going to win many games if you give away goals like that."

The 18 year old striker felt that his new team had looked strong from the kick off and looked likely winners until they went into a two goal lead:-

"We put quite a lot of pressure on them right from the start. It didn't look like at any point that we were going to lose the game, certainly that's how it felt on the pitch.

"We played really well at times and moved the ball well. When we took a 2-0 lead I think everybody took a step back. We should have kept the ball instead of charging forward with as many men. It made us short at the back and we got caught on the break.

"We didn't need to have as many forward in search of the third goal. They just managed to punish us."

Lawrence Shankland

Lawrence was in no mood to celebrate his second Dunfermline goal in three games since in the end it meant little. He did however pay tribute to Lewis Martin for the pass that set him up:-

"It was a good pass from the centre half and I just ran on to it. I put it away but we need to start now defending easy goals."

Manager Jim Jefferies called it naivety but Lawrence stressed that it was a matter of urgency that the team matured:-

"We are all young boys but we need to learn soon; you can't be giving three goals away when you are two goals up in any game or at any level. We need to learn to be winners."
