A Geggan again!
Saturday, 4th Jan 2014"Three goals in two games here against Stenhousemuir, I really like coming here!"
The inclement January weather, the exertions of Monday night's match against Rangers and the unpopular Ochilview playing surface was not going to affect Andy Geggan's pleasure of coming up with a last minute winner for the second time running there against Stenhousemuir. He said:-
"I am delighted with the win even though we didn't perform in the second half. The main thing was to get three points, this is a hard place to come to but we did it. They had more experience than ourselves and that maybe told a bit in the second half."
It certainly looked that way when Stenhousemuir scored an equaliser six minutes from the end. The home side had pummelled the Pars for most of the second half. John Gemmell made his physical presence count and when the substitute was guilty of a horrendous miss with twenty minutes remaining, Dunfermline fans had believed the luck was on their side. The equaliser merely stimulated another phenomenal Pars finale.
Andy went up for a 91st minute corner and as 19 year old Ross Drummond prepared to deliver what had to be the visitors last chance for a winning goal, he admitted to being confident that he could pull the result out of the bag:-
"Every time I go up for a corner I always feel that I have a chance and if I get that chance I will take it. I maybe should have got one in the first half but I got a wee nudge on to the post. I am just delighted that I got the header at the end."
The Pars hero was unaware that the match had gone into added time at the end of the regulation 90 minutes and following his 89th minute winner against the same opposition, on the same park in August Andy could only add:-
"They must hate me, it happens all the time especially when I come here. Everybody always moans about the pitch here but I like it when it has a bit of rain on it. Three goals in two games here against Stenhousemuir, I really like coming here!"
At the age of 26 Andy was Dunfermline's oldest player on the park and apart from the two 23 year olds Ryan Wallace and Stephen Husband all the others were 21 or under. Jim Jefferies young team got even younger with Josh Falkingham having to miss the match through a hand injury and Geggan praised the starting debut of the captain's replacement, Faissal El Bakhtaoui.
"I thought he was absolutely terrific, our Man of the Match. What a finish he had in the first half, he has done really well on his debut. He follows into the team Ryan Williamson and Lewis Martin but they all will get experience as they go on. It was a young team but I am delighted for Faze.
"Something happened with Whitts hamstring so Ross Drummond has come on and done a fair job even though the second half was against us. He did well and it was a good ball in for the goal."
The significance of Andy's last gasp goal against Stenhousemuir is that the gap between Dunfermline in 2nd and Stenhousemuir in 5th place becomes 13 points.
"The gaffer said before the game that if we could get a result over Stenny then we could go into next week (against Stranraer) and open a wee gap. We just need to kick on and keep going until the end of the season. Hopefully we will still be there."
The win also means that the Pars players will not be training in the horrid weather forecasted for Friday and Saturday:-
"We will be off until Monday now, all the boys are delighted so I put the music on. They are all shouting, it might have been different had I not got the header but in fairness to the gaffer, I think he would have given us it off simply because we have played two games in one week. To get the result is even better.
"There was only one way to bounce back after Monday's game. I know it was Rangers but we just didn't perform and I am just pleased that we won to repay the fans. There was an unbelievable attendance, we heard them singing and chanting - they did really well for us. I am just glad we got the result in the end for them and they can have a happy weekend like us!"
