Dunfermline Athletic won their first trophy of the season on Tuesday night - the Centenary Cup - played against a Valleyfield Select as part of High Valleyfield's Centenary Celebrations. It was Hamish French's U19s that took the glory in some style with Fraser Moncrieff hitting a hat trick within nine minutes late in the game.
The Under 19s had only been back in training for a day when they met the challenge from a Valleyfield Select that included former Pars player John Fraser, Hamilton goalie coach Brian Potter and a blend of local experienced Junior players.
Shaun BYRNE headed in from an Aaron Scott free kick after just four minutes and Valleyfield spurned a chance to go level midway through the half when a spot kick was driven on to the crossbar. That meant Dunfermline were ahead at the interval but another home penalty five minutes into the second half was converted.
Opportunities came and went for the visitors before MONCRIEFF beat two defenders in 75 minutes and finished from a narrow angle. Six minutes later he made it 3-1when on hand to accept Steven Leslie's parried shot.
MONCRIEFF completed his hat trick with a composed finish in 84 minutes to give what was a relatively young U19 team a resounding victory. Two of the older players - McWhirter and Schiavone - had to be subbed in the first half, John MacDonald is on holiday and striker Scott McIntosh is out long term with an operation on his cruciate scheduled for next Tuesday. In total five of the U17 squad were involved including the three goal hero Moncrieff.
While delighted with the rewards from the evening's game Hamish French was at pains to remind his squad that they have to realise that there is still work to be done for the competitive start to the season.
