Nick Phinn Post Airdrie

Saturday, 1st May 2010

"That was my sixth goal but only half of what I got last season. That's OK considering that I have not played as many games but I was still looking to score a few more than that."

Nick Phinn and Graeme Holmes

Nick Phinn had to thank Joe Cardle for his unselfishness to allow him to find the net for the sixth time this season:-

"He gave me a shout to leave it as the cross came in and I was expecting him to shoot himself but he just put it on a plate for me. It was a great touch from Joe and happily it bounced lovely for me."

The most surprising element of Nick's subsequent celebration was a dart to the bench to celebrate with sub Graeme Holmes:-

"We have been saying it all season, we have always said that if one of us scores we will run to each other but we always keep forgetting. I remembered today so it was a big laugh when I went over to him, that was all it was."

After Graeme's release on Thursday it was Nick's last chance to remember at Airdrie. Nick is disappointed that his good friend will be exiting East End Park:-

"I became quite close with 'Homer' over the time he has been here, so it is disappointing to see him go. We are going on holiday together and I am sure that we will stay close friends in the future."

21 year old Nick would obviously have liked to have emulated his goals haul from last season:-

"That was my sixth goal but only half of what I got last season. That's OK considering that I have not played as many games but I was still looking to score a few more than that."

The midfield have all chipped in with goals this season. Steven Bell hit a hat-trick the previous Saturday to take his total to 11, Joe Cardle has scored 8 and Willie Gibson has 10 to his name.

"It has been a great attribute for us with the midfielders scoring this season so it helps the team overall.

"We needed results to go our way to finish third, luckily enough it did. We are disappointed because in the last couple of weeks we knew that there was no chance of us winning the league but we just wanted to finish as high up the table as we could. We have done that, so we are happy with that."

Accepting that Dunfermline will be operating with a smaller squad for next season, Nick said:-

"Even in the higher league there is not as much money around as there was years ago. We have just got to deal with that and get on with it. We know ourselves that we have a great squad of boys, we will have to wait and see the new faces that the gaffer brings in but we will be promotion again next season."

Nick will be jetting off to Cyprus after next weekend's Open Day at East End Park along with several other team mates for the wedding of Steven Bell. Then its off to Florida for a couple of weeks with his girlfriend.
