Nick Phinn Post Inverness
Sunday, 18th Apr 2010"I thought it was harsh to be fair, there is maybe a slight hand hall. It was more shoulder cum hand. The linesman called it the way he saw it."
Nick Phinn was disappointed to see his 26th minute 'goal' chalked off especially since he believes that in the First Division it is so important to score the first goal.
"If you take the lead there is a great record of going on to win games. If it had stood we might have gone on and won the game who knows it might been a different story. It just wasn't to be.
"I thought it was harsh to be fair, there is maybe a slight hand hall. It was more shoulder cum hand. The linesman called it the way he saw it."
Nick pointed out where he considered the ball had hit him - mainly shoulder but also upper arm:-
"It was right at the top, maybe it was half and half but I was not allowed it, maybe another day."
It was a real shame that Nick was not allowed the goal because his finish was ice cool to chip Ryan Esson and net in total silence at the Kessock Bridge end. It took a few seconds for the 200 travelling supporters to realise that there was something to cheer but then referee Willie Collum blew up for the foul and not a goal. This was one of two first half set backs - David Graham springing the offside trap to square the ball for Steven Bell to put away. The offside decision on Graham was in the marginal category:-
"We scored from the one where Davie was offside. The first goal is massive in this league, if we were to get it there is every chance that we could have gone on to win.
"When Inverness discovered Dundee were losing at half time I think it gave them a boost to go on and win the game. They managed to score the first goal and they got confidence and looked as if they believed they could go on and score again. They did and they saw the game out.
"They were great goals, obviously we were disappointed to lose to a ball over the top. We should have defended it better but you have to give Rooney credit for a great finish for the first goal. He saw the keeper off the line and it was a great finish from his point of view."
It just wasn't the right day to be the opposing team at the Caledonian Thistle stadium:-
"We knew that there would be a party atmosphere if they were to win the game and we didn't want to be involved in that. We wanted to spoil the party but we never managed it."
Nick and his team mates have to pick it all up again to face Morton at East End Park next Saturday:-
"In the next two games we play Morton and Airdrie who are fighting for their lives. Every point is going to matter to them so we know it is not going to be a lifeless end of season game."
Looking around the Inverness ground with Manager, players and fans all but celebrating a return to the SPL at the first time of asking the Dunfermline equivalents could not help but feel extremely envious. Nick explained the feeling in the dressing room:-
"Up until a few weeks ago we knew we were in with a wee sniff of promotion but the Ross County game at home at the beginning of the month set us back. That was maybe one of our last chances to challenge for the league but it wasn't to be this year. We have had a talk about it to see what we can improve on. We just want to get the next two games out of the way and then look to build for next season."
