Dunfermline Athletic Football Club are saddened to hear of the death on Friday 12th March of 1968 cup winner Hugh Robertson. Funeral Arrangements Announced

Dunfermline Athletic Football Club are saddened to hear of the death on Friday 12th March of 1968 cup winner Hugh Robertson.

Hugh's funeral will be held in Dreghorn Crematorium at 1pm on Friday 19th March.

Between 1965 and 1971 Hugh Robertson made 239 first team appearances for Dunfermline, scoring 61 goals.

Hugh was born in Auchenleck on 29th November 1939 and played his early football at the local Junior side, Auchenleck Talbot.  In 1957 at the age of 17 he joined Dundee as a part timer, combining his play with his job as a miner.  Later he went full time and enjoyed unprecedented success as Dundee won the League Championship in 1962, and the following season reached the semi final of the European Cup.

On 14th May 1965, 'Shuggie' joined Dunfermline Athletic in a £10,000 transfer. Essentially brought in to replace Jackie Sinclair who had moved to Leicester City.  Hugh did that, and more.  His bustling wing play combined with a lethal shot made him one of the Pars most effective players over the next six years.

As well as being one of the team that brought the Scottish Cup back in 1968, he played in most of the Pars European ties. He also scored some memorable goals including two at Ibrox on Christmas Day 1965 to give the Pars their first ever win there.  He hit a hat-trick against Raith Rovers on New Years Day 1968 and the opening goal against Celtic in the famous victory over the European champions at Parkhead in the First Round of the 68 Scottish Cup.

Hugh left Dunfermline in 1971 to join Arbroath but was forced to give up on medical grounds.  He took on the job as trainer at Gayfield before moving back to Dens Park as Dundee's Reserve Team Coach.  Later he was to make a name for himself as a coach with Boldklub in Denmark.
