Steven Bell Post Morton
Monday, 1st Mar 2010"Last week just showed the inconsistency that we have had this season. The Manager has had a good word with us and made a couple of changes today to show what he is about.
Steven Bell was pleased with his and the team's performance on Saturday especially having experienced his Manager, Jim McIntyre's wrath in the week following the disappointing home defeat to Ayr the previous Saturday:-
"I thought for the first half hour that we dominated the game. For the last 15 minutes of the first half they came back into it and then at the start of the second half they got their goal but we just kicked on after that. We didn't play long balls like we did last week, we kept passing it and thankfully we won.
"Last week just showed the inconsistency that we have had this season. The Manager has had a good word with us and made a couple of changes today to show what he is about. At 1-0 down we just had to keep playing our own game and get the goals at the end."
Steven was asked if the Manager had lost the rag after last week:-
"Yes he did; it's in his nature - he is like that as a player as well. He told us some home truths that we had to hear. A couple of boys including myself need 'to get the finger out'. It is about how you react to it, you could go away, put your head down and sulk."
Steven felt that he reacted well and admitted how he felt that he had a role in the team that he enjoyed:-
"My preferred position is central midfield so I am glad I am playing in there this season."
It was from a wide position however that Steven provided the cross that won the match for Dunfermline:-
"I was just trying to give Greg Ross an option. I gave him a couple of those in the first half because the gaffer tries to get me playing like that with the midfielders making forward runs. I just saw a gap and went for it, thankfully we got a goal from it."
Such was the size of the gap, Morton keeper felt that he should come charging out of his penalty box to usher the ball out at the right byeline. A decision he was to rue.
"The keeper tried to jump over it but I read him. I then got in a cross that wee Ross was there to collect and it was a good stick away by Gary Mason."
The addition of Gary Mason and Ross Campbell has extended the strength in depth.
"There are a couple of boys who can play in two or three positions but we are lacking a bit up front. We had Andy Kirk out last week, Graham Bayne and Steven McDougall. The gaffer had to come on and he has not played a lot of football."
A follow up question enquired how the Manager had played but Steven just answered that with another:-
"Were you at the game? We were meant to see the video this week but the rumour is that it's broke. He took it well - he is like that."
Steven hopes to take as many points as possible from the remaining 13 league games:-
"We have eight games in March and we will win six of them. Everybody drops points against everybody else and we just need to sort out our inconsistency. This is the right time to do it. The gaffer has said 'if we are ever going to do it we need to do it now'."
Steven is very aware that his contract is up at the end of the season but he is hopeful that an option on his existing contract can keep him at East End Park:-
"I don't know if he wants to take it up and I will have to go and speak to him. It is based on 18 competitive games then another year kicks in. I am not too sure how it works but I have played around 21. I think it is at the club's discretion but I like it here, I like the boys, it's a big club who deserve to be up there.
Looking back on how things are different at Dunfermline and in comparison to Stirling where you don't get criticised as much for giving away the ball:-
"Here if you give the ball away once they are right on your back. It is good thing because they demand the best from you."
