Gibson confident for Pars
Wednesday, 15th Jul 2009"I played with good players at Kilmarnock but we have the quality here to play in the SPL. Right from the Manager through to the players it is a great club to be at."
Signed from Kilmarnock for a nominal fee Willie Gibson made his East End Park debut on Tuesday night in the match against Dundee United. The 24 year old midfielder spoke exclusively to the website:-
"I missed seven or eight sessions due to a calf strain so I am still trying to play catch up. The Manager has said that he wants me involved in as many games as possible but I need to do a bit extra yet because I missed a lot of double sessions that involved a lot of running.
"I started on Saturday down at Blyth and hopefully I will start every time as I get fitter. The Manager has said that my ability is not in question, I just need to step my fitness up to get a game and to prove that I can do a job."
After four seasons at Queen of the South Gibson joined Killie from Dumfries club in January 2007. His 107 appearances for QOS were followed by 59 at Kilmarnock where he notched five league goals. Willie was well aware of the kind of opposition that Dundee United would give his nbew club:-
"I never got to play that much at Kilmarnock so this is a fresh start for me and hopefully I can make the most of it. United are a really good side with good players, they can pass the ball about and they do it that quick that you are chasing shadows.
"I did not too bad but I can do a lot better when the sharpness comes. I always feel that when I am on top of my fitness I can do a good job. I hope to get more minutes on the pitch against Hibs, it is a good way to get fitness as well and to find out how the boys play."
Jim McIntyre impressed Willie when he signed and he has not been let down by the pre season training or the club's approach:-
"I am very impressed with him, he is a good guy, he talks to you a lot and helps you. He tells you what you are doing right, what you are doing wrong but it is always constructive. It's good to hear constructive criticism rather than just criticism all the time; it makes all the difference.
"There are a lot of good players here; I was aware of a few of them before I came. I played with good players at Kilmarnock but we have the quality here to play in the SPL. Right from the Manager through to the players it is a great club to be at."
