Greg Ross finds the net
Saturday, 4th Apr 2009"I have not played much recently and my contract is up at the end of the season so I have got to try and show the Manager that I deserve a new one. I have to give the Manager something to think about."
The Airdrie match day programme has had its problems identifying Greg Ross in the past but now its the Airdrie defence that wish they had paid closer attention to the 21 year old who has been described firstly as an Albanian and then on Saturday as a product of Cowdenbeath FC. Greg's goal at Airdrie on Saturday came in the third minute of added time, earning him super sub status since he had just been on the pitch for quarter of an hour. He now hopes that helps in his quest to earn a new contract at East End Park. "The gaffer decided to put me and Rory Loy on near the end. Unluckily we lost a goal as soon as we went on so it wasn't the best of starts. "I was sent on to play where Steven Bell was playing and try and support Baynee getting forward. It was just fresh legs more than anything else and I have just got to try and take my chances once I get on. "We were throwing bodies near the end and the cross came over, big Baynee went up with the keeper and it just hit off my shoulder more than anything else and played it over the line. It was a good ball from Aussie, I thought Baynee was going to win it because the keeper is not the biggest of keepers so he had a chance. It just came through and hit off me. "I am just disappointed not to win the game but they way it was I will take the point. In the dressing room everyone was down because coming to teams at the bottom of the league, no disrespect to Airdrie, we need to be winning these games if we are to go for promotion. "We have two massive games coming up against St Johnstone, we need to win these and then take one game at a time. "I have not played much recently and my contract is up at the end of the season so I have got to try and show the Manager that I deserve a new one. I have to give the Manager something to think about." Greg joined the DAFC Youth Initiative as a 14 year old, playing for the Under 15s, progressing on to Under 17 level to make his first team debut against Kilmarnock at home Saturday 20th November 2004. In so doing he became the youngest ever player, at 17 years and 202 days, to start a Premier League match for Dunfermline. The game against Airdrie was just Greg's 11th appearance of this season and brought his first goal since scoring at Celtic Park on 26th November 2005. Injury has denied Greg an opportunity to show Jim McIntyre the kind of performances that catapulted Greg from youth football to the SPL. "Calum Woods has been excellent at right back where I normally play and he has been rewarded with a new contract. It is difficult to get a chance but you just have to do the best you can. With games in midweek just now there is no chance to show in reserve games. It is just in training that you need to work hard and take the chances when you can. "Nothing has been said about my contract but expect that will be left until the end of the season. There are a few boys out of contract but we are not think about that. There is still the chance of getting into a Scottish Cup Final so there's a lot more important things to think about at the moment than boys who are out of contract. "My future will take care of itself but it is all about winning games at the moment."
