The newly refurbished Alhambra Theatre will play host to a wonderful evening of nostalgia on Friday 5th December. Fans young and old will be able to sit back and watch their heroes win two Scottish Cups on the Big Screen.
In this the 40th anniversary of the Pars winning the Cup in '68, the story of Dunfermline Athletic's glorious decade in the Sixties will unfold with interviews with Harry Melrose, Charlie Dickson, Willie Cunningham, Ron Mailer and many others.
Seeing the film on the big screen will be excitement enough, but for many fans, going along to the Alhambra will in itself provide a curiosity value that the organisers think should pack them in.Previous generations of Pars fans would have known the Alhambra as the biggest of four cinemas in Dunfermline, and in its day it packed them in for films like Charlton Heston's Ten Commandments.
The Alhambra opened its doors on Tuesday 22nd August 1922 with a black and white silent feature 'Over the Hill'. It was disappointing to many that such a beautiful theatre should offer films and not live entertainment, but the owners promised patrons that the best of the touring companies would be brought to the Alhambra. Some of the better known performers to have appeared on the Alhambra's huge stage over the years included, Harry Gordon, Marty Wilde, Jimmy Logan, Jimmy Shand, the Alexander Brothers, Ricky Vallance and the Bachelors. One of the highlights in its history was the occasion in August 1928 when King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother, were given the Freedom of Dunfermline on stage.
The Alhambra went the way of so many other theatres when it closed its doors and converted into a bingo hall in 1965. It continued in this way till 2006 when it was rescued by Bill Fletcher of Linklever Ltd to be restored to its former glory as one of Scotland's major live entertainment venues. The former Director of the Edinburgh Fringe festival, Paul Gudgin, has teamed up with Bill to help realise this vision, and people will get the opportunity to see how the project is progressing at the showing of 'The Glory Years' on Friday 5th December.
Tickets priced £10 are available online at Ticketmaster, and also at East EndPark club shop on 01383 626737. They will also be available from the Club Shop in the Kingsgate when it opens in November. Doors open at the Alhambra at 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start.
