Dunfermline Athletic

Campaign to honour Townhill man

Wednesday, 8th Oct 2008

As DAFC look forward to its Hall of Fame on Saturday, moves are afoot to persuade the SFA to honour Billy Liddell.

The career facts surrounding Billy Liddell are simply stunning. He scored 224 goals in 537 games for the Reds over fourteen years, the last of these appearances coming in 1960 at the age of 38. He was also capped 29 times by Scotland and was one of only two players to represent Great Britain twice. Despite Liverpool 's relegation to the second division he never sought a move and his loyalty was something that today's stars could learn from. Amazingly Billy did all this despite being only part time, as he also held down a job as an accountant in Liverpool , working there in the afternoons after training.

In 1950 Billy was at the forefront of Liverpool's run to their first ever appearance at Wembley, playing in all 7 FA Cup games scoring twice, before losing 2-0 to Arsenal. Billy's contribution to the Liverpool side was so great that the club were affectionately nicknamed 'Liddellpool.'

Billy's achievements have not gone unnoticed on Merseyside, where he is still fondly remembered and a plaque has been unveiled in his honour at the entrance to the Liverpool FC museum (left). Yet remarkably he has not been included in the Scottish FA's Hall Of Fame at Hampden Park . As such the Billy Liddell Memorial Group has been founded with the intention of rectifying this, but a more important goal is to see the creation of a permanent memorial to him in his birthplace of Townhill near Dunfermline in Fife .

The group has already made a successful representation to the Scottish Parliament Petitions Committee at Holyrood, an event that was covered by Scottish Television News. A recent success for the group was when Fife Council, who have been very supportive of the group, agreed to rename the Townhill Sports Complex the Billy Liddell Sports Complex and it is hope to have a renaming event in the near future.

The group is also in the process of raising funds so the dream of a lasting memorial can become a reality.
