Macca on Friday

Friday, 3rd Oct 2008

03/10/08: "It is great for me that following the midweek performance I now have a selection problem for my bench never mind the team. At least we have a strength there, I am quite happy with that.

Jim McIntyre is hoping to extend his team's unbeaten away run to five matches when they take on Clyde on Saturday:-

"We need to go there and try and pick up the three points. It's another away game for us but we have not a bad away record.

"Clyde have brought in seven or eight players, maybe more but they are one of those teams who have a good result and then a bad result. It will be a difficult game and Broadwood is an open and windy place. Sometimes it is not the most attractive game of football to watch but it is important game for us and we must ensure that we come out on top."

The away record was only kept alive thanks to a late goal from substitute Ross Campbell and Macca agreed that some might view that as getting out of jail at Cappielow:-

"I suppose people will look at it that way in terms of when we scored. Morton no doubt had the clearer cut chances but first half we put loads of crosses into the box and were miles better when it came to playing football. We got caught on the break a couple of times but we were the better team in the first half but the second belonged to Morton.

"The character they showed to keep going and keep rattling away meant that we could have scored again after the goal. I thought we got what we deserved - there have been loads of games this season when we have given teams a tanking, Airdrie comes to mind with ten men but we got nothing out of it.

"I thought we deserved something out the Livingston game after hitting the bar. Look at the Partick Thistle, everybody has their own wee hard luck stories but I thought we got what we merited."

The Pars Manager would not reveal his targets but as the first round of league matches come to a close we looked back with some satisfaction on the first eight games. He recognised that it is paramount that his side keep picking up points and not get left behind:-

"It could be a good first nine games if we go and win on Saturday. If Clyde were to win they would be on the same points as us - that shows you how congested the league is with everybody beating everybody. It is whoever puts a consistent run away who is going to break away."

Macca watched on loan striker, Ross Campbell score a hat trick and Iain Williamson a double for the reserves on Tuesday against St Johnstone. For the first time in his managerial tenure, with only Graeme Holmes and himself still ruled out, he is pleased to have selection problems for the right reasons:-

"It is great for me that following the midweek performance I now have a selection problem for my bench never mind the team. At least we have a strength there, I am quite happy with that. We are not doing a lot wrong at the minute and I like the way we have been playing it's just that we have not been killing teams off."

Not converting enough from all the crosses into the box is Jim McIntyre's conclusion. Kevin Harper from the right and Austin McCann on the other side, supplemented by Simon Wiles means that there has been no shortage of supply to his strikers:-

"That's something we have worked on in training this week so hopefully that will bear fruit. We need to get more out of the strikers and more out of midfielders getting into the box to help them as well."

There is no match next Saturday but East Fife come to East End Park on Thursday night. The Manager has yet to make up his mind on how he will approach that Fife Cup Semi Final but if the result is not right against Clyde it's unlikely anyone at Dunfermline will be getting a break during the international week.
