Eye Opener for Wilson
Sunday, 5th Aug 2007"Problem we are going to have this season is our own performances and not who we are playing against. Credit to Hamilton they stuck to their task and did very well.
Scott Wilson spoke after the curtain raiser at New Douglas Park:-
"We knew it was going to be very difficult and it has turned out that way. You can point your finger at the pitch and balls, whatever but at the end of the day Hamilton probably deserved it in the end."
Scott reckoned that Referee Dougie McDonald had no alternative but to send off his partner in central defence, Phil McGuire:-
"I don't think Phil meant to take him down but the boy just came across him and he had no option but to send him off.
"Well done to Hamilton but we are just more disappointed with the goals that we gave away today. The second goal especially. Goals like that are going to kill us no matter who we are playing. The timing was ridiculous; we lost a goal early doors and then within two minutes in the second half. To lose a man was always going to be a problem. It was going to be difficult with eleven players so to go down to ten we were really struggling. At times we were really hanging on to the game.
"If we make mistakes like that you are going to lose goals. We have eyes on winning this league and need to scrub that out right away.
"When you see the support that we had today, we let a lot of people down. It is a culture shock but it was the first game and it is a warning to us not to be slack.
"The other problem we are going to have this season is our own performances and not who we are playing against. Credit to Hamilton they stuck to their task and did very well. They will be difficult to beat here but we have to concentrate on ourselves.
"We had a good pre season, playing alright and then to play like that today is a disappointment. We expect teams to raise their game in every game against us this season but I am disappointed in the way we played because I don't think we strung ten passes together. We are not really creating enough chances and we are going to have to create chances in this league.
"We missed a couple of chances early on just after they scored. It is always difficult to come back against teams like Hamilton.
"We have to concentrate on ourselves; there are a lot of disappointed guys in there but we knew it was going to be difficult - I am not saying that we were taking it easy or anything because we we weren't. It is an eye opener definitely, it is the first game of the season and I am glad that it came now rather in an important one. Well done to Hamilton but we have a lot to work on."
