Tam McManus Post St Mirren
Tuesday, 1st May 2007"All the boys were nervous because we knew if we didn't win, we were down.
"It is a huge goal for us. At half time at 0-0 it was slipping away from us a bit. We never really played in the first half, we were so nervous on the ball. Nobody was shouting for it, it was just helter skelter and that suited St Mirren.
"We have more football players who can get the ball down but the gaffer went through us at half time and told us to show a bit of bottle and get on the ball. Second half we started passing it about and created a few chances. I heard the offside 'goal' wasn't offside, so I am disappointed about that. I should have scored after that so I got a bit of luck for the goal. It just broke for me and things are going well for me after having had not such a good time over the last couple of years."
Did the players feel the tension in the game?
"Yes, all the boys were nervous because we knew if we didn't win, we were down. We had to win the game and I am just delighted that I got the winner.
"I'd rather be up the top end of the table but it is exciting for the fans but the boys were feeling the pressure tonight. It is the same for the St Mirren boys, it is their livelihoods that are at stake. I feel sorry for whoever goes down but I just want to make sure that it is not us."
Tam knows what its like to be on the wrong side in a relegation fight, suffering the fate with Dundee:-
"In 96th minute I hit the post and we got relegated."
He highlighted the Pars good defensive play but felt that they might need to win their last three SPL fixtures:-
"Our defence is solid just now and we keep sinking goals so if we can keep that up we can maybe pull it off. ST Mirren are scrapping for their lives. I have been in the situation where some players put the tools away near the end of the season and think about summer holidays. We relied a bit on Falkirk and they didn't turn up and St Mirren ran over the top of them. We don't want that to happen again, we want to make sure that we do the business and not rely on anybody else."
